Windows 98 Hard Drive Defragmentation

In the past I was always able to defragment the hard drive ("C") after turning off scheduled tasks, modifying power saver settings to "always on", selecting "none" for screen saver. exiting all Windows and other programs, exiting Internet Explorer, closing all open windows, and logging off from my ISP.

This no longer works. Windows tries to defragment time after time, but never succeeds. It gives me a message that the "C" drive has tried to degragment 10 times but is not successful. This limited information is not very helpful and Microsoft is difficult to contact and wants me to pay for simple advice.

I can still degragment a 1.44 MB floppy disk and a 100 MB Zip disk without problems, but not the hard drive. Can you help me? Please let me know if this is insufficient information for your help. I am not a computer expert by any means.

Much thanks in advance

Mike Morris

I've removed your email address Mike. Never a good Idea to include it on a public forum, even one as safe as this one. No need either as all replies to your question will come to this topic for you to see.

If you wish to place your email address on your control panel then this is quite safe as it will only show as a link, and not your actual address. Welcome to the forum :)

This usually indicates that "something" is running and accessing the HD. Make sure you don't have any spyware or other malware that is running on your PC.

I would also suggest that you clean out your Temp folder and browser cache, then run CHKDSK before trying to defragment again.

P.S. and welcome to the Forum! :)

I agree with pops regarding Diskeeper. One small point, ms6902 may not know what CHKDSK is, as he is using Windows 98. He should look in Start/Programs/Accessories/System tools. It is listed there as Scan disk.

Defrag in Windows 9x should be run with Windows in safe mode. :)

All you need to do is hold down the CTRL key at the first sign of any text on the screen during boot until the Windows 98 Startup Menu appears, then choose "Safe Mode" from the list. (Using the arrow keys, or pressing the number shown).

In Safe Mode there will be pretty much nothing running, and you should now be able to defrag the drive.
