benb Posted March 27, 2005 Report Share Posted March 27, 2005 I have recently bought and installed Zonealarm Pro due to the malicious hackers there are right now, and to test my security, I went to http://www.grc.com and used there awesome Shields UP internet vulnerability tester. Zonealarm definately did help, although there was one problem when I did the "Common Ports" test. All the ports were "stealth", that was all good, except I still failed. Why? Because of their ping test. Ping Reply: RECEIVED (FAILED) — Your system REPLIED to our Ping (ICMP Echo) requests, making it visible on the Internet. Most personal firewalls can be configured to block, drop, and ignore such ping requests in order to better hide systems from hackers. This is highly recommended since "Ping" is among the oldest and most common methods used to locate systems prior to further exploitation.Does anyone know how to configure either a D-Link 624 Wireless Router or Zonealarm Pro 5.5.062.011 to block ping requests that Shields UP told about. Any suggestions would be helpful :) PS: I know the SP2 Windows Firewall will block ping requests, but I absolutely despise it so thats why I'm asking for other suggestions. benb Posted March 27, 2005 Author Report Share Posted March 27, 2005 I partially answered my own question, I found the place to change Zonealarm Options (see attachment for instructions) but I was not able to pass Shields UP. Do you think it is getting into another computer on my home network? There are two wired desktops, and one wireless laptop. One desktop (this) is running a fully updated SP2 w/ Zonealarm Pro. Desktop 2 is running SP1 and as we speak is installing SP2 and is running Zonealarm Pro. The laptop is running SP2 and I do not believe it is running a firewall (it is in use right now, so I can't check). Since they are behind a router, not a hub, they all share the same IP.
