CurlyWhirly Posted April 1, 2005 Report Share Posted April 1, 2005 I use an online bank, and with all the scare stories about keylogging trojans, I now use the on screen keyboard when entering passwords or other confidential information on secure websites. I just happened to stumble across it the other day. I didn't even know it was there, so I must learn to explore the menus a bit more carefully in future :blush: I know that there are trojans that can capture screenshots, but it is bound to be a bit safer than typing in passwords, etc. using the standard keyboard, as if a keylogger was on your PC, all it would record would be mouse clicks! I used to use the rather long-winded Accessibility menu method to activate it, until spikeychris told me of a much quicker method! dogbreath1 Posted April 16, 2005 Report Share Posted April 16, 2005 It's quite handy to create a shortcut to OLK then drag it onto your (enabled) quick launch bar. It is bound to be a bit safer than entering the info through the keyboard, as if there was a keylogger on your PC, all it would detect would be mouse clicks as opposed to keyboard characters! scuzzman Posted April 17, 2005 Report Share Posted April 17, 2005 Actually, it would be no safer. The reason is this:Most keyloggers use the KEY_HOOK event in the Windows API to grab keystrokes. This is the same event that makes a letter appear on your screen after being pressed, be it via the OSK or your regular keyboard. The only *real* difference between OSK and a keyboard, is that a keyboard must go through a little more processing first, which a keylogger can't attack anyway considering it's software and the processor, being hardware, is protected by the Windows HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer). Also, when trying to assist people from other countries to write home via email on an English KB -- that can be a real challenge. It is then useful to install the language packs with Windows and allow them to use the OSK, as it will look and "feel" like their home keyboard.
