ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
I have an older Dell Inspiron with Windows 2000 on it. The Display Adapter is an Intel 82830M Graphics Controller. For about a year now WindowsUpdate is telling me that there is a driver updated available.Dell Inc. - VideoIntel Corporation display software update released on February 10 2004.My installed version is 6.14.10.3889 dated Aug. 31, 2004 (downloaded from the Intel site). If I let WindowsUpdate run, it installs version 6.14.10.3762 dated Feb. 10, 2004.Why does WindowsUpdate wants me to have an older driver? I is not a big deal, but I just don't understand it. Any suggestions?(WindowsUpdate V6 has a feature that let us permanently hide an item, but of course Win2K is still on V4).P.S. and what is that 'Dell, Inc.' reference on top of the update item - is that old update actually supplied by Dell? nellie2
I don't really know why WU wants you to download the older update.. it probably can't find the signature for it on your system. It keeps telling me that there is a sound driver update that I need... but I don't. Yes I would imagine that the driver was supplied by Dell which is why it says Dell Inc. -pops-
I wish that M$ would keep away from offering updates to other peoples software. Almost invariably it is out of date and if it isn't, it fubars your computer if you attempt to install it. I've had a number of disasters like this in the past - no more - I do not allow automatic updates of anything but, especially from M$. I allow it to inform me of updates but I insist the installation is under my control. Even then, I carefully look around to make sure that other people have installed the thing without problems - it has been known that M$ themselves have issued updates for their own software that has been "less than reliable".Yes, I have had persistent reminders about these updates when I go to the update site but I ignore them, like you are doing. madboy33
pwillenerSometimes updates does silly thingsI have also the same problem, but with a nvidia driver, which is clearly out of date and does NOT install anyway when you try to update it.I am a BETA tester for the new update V6 which is coming and this problem is still not fixedSee the attachment below
Agent Smith
I always thought this was due to the "certification" of the driver. Therefore if your driver is a newer version, but yet to be certified by M$, then update ignores it and suggests you install the older certified driver. In my personal experience, I would not ever use drivers from windows update. I have seen more than enough systems messed up by doing this to make sure I never bother.
madboy33
Not necessarily need certification The nvidia drivers are M$ certified

ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
I am a BETA tester for the new update V6 which is coming and this problem is still not fixedYes, the problem that it suggests updates that are not applicable is still not fixed. But V6 has the option to permanently hide updates that you will not apply, e.g. the Windows Journal Viewer for XP. There is an option somewhere that says "Don't show me this update again" - this will hide selected updates (until you click on "Restore hidden updates".Anyway, thanks for all the info - I know now that I'm not alone with unwanted WindowsUpdates.
