help ! when starting my 98SE i get a box that says explorer has performed an illegal operation.details show that it's caused by an invalid page fault in module

<unknown> at 000:61b85cf6. i have bought and used countrspy and registry mechanic.also have spybot, easyclean, ccleaner and others.i have to just move the warning box out of the way .then the computer seems to function mostly ok,except startup is touch and go.am fairly new at this, but am trying really hard!

http://www.adare.ca/ipftips.htm gives some hints as to the probable cause of your type of error

Reason

One of the more common reasons for "Invalid Page Fault" messages is memory issues. Whether it be:

-an improper attempt to use random access memory.

- attempts to load data from virtual memory that it can not locate. Often occuring when areas of the virtual memory become corrupted.

- the virtual memory becomes unstable due to shortage of RAM.

- the virtual memory becomes unstable due to shortage of hard drive space.

- the virtual memory has been corrupted by a program.

- the program is attempting to access data which is being modified by another program which is running at the same time

.

How much memory do you have ?

how many programs are starting with windows ?

Is your hard drive becoming full ?

have 578 RAM,(also have a stick of 256 w/Ecc.can i put it in W/nonECC?)

several programs on startup, mostly spyware/virus stuff.have tried turning all off at startup except systray and load power profile, but problem persists.

properties says 5.5GB used,4GB free on c drive.also have 6GB d drive ,mostly for storage.

just remembered to note that office and word won't open(computer hangs).

sometimes says "not enough disk space..."

did i post my answer in the right place?

thank you.

I remember that Win98 corrupted quite easily and needed re-installing from time to time. Which was actually quite easy; you could install it over the existing Win98 without losing any installed applications.

Do you have the Win98 CD-ROM? If so, I'd suggest you try a couple of things.

  • First try the System File Checker - type sfc /scannow and let SFC check and replace missing or corrupted files. You'll need the Win98 CD-ROM.
  • If that doesn't work, try a Win98 Verify installation. That will also check and replace missing/corrupt files, but also verify the proper installation of these files. It is best to use Batch98 to do that - see my very old website http://www2.gol.com/users/pbw/jkeyb.htm#w95_rein and also http://www2.gol.com/users/pbw/filelib/BATCH98.DOC for some basic information on Win9x batch setup. Use the Verify=1 option in the batch script.
  • If that still didn't cure your problem, reinstall with Verify=0 - this will do a full Win98 reinstall, but you still won't lose any installed applications.

Hope one of the steps above will solve your problem.

F8 didn't seem to do anything, however on startup screen (normal, safe etc.) i chose command prompt and typed scanreg/fix and it did its thing and said registry repaired.i typed exit at C:\ prompt with no effect so turned off manually.explorer shutdown box still appears midscreen when system comes on.

sorry to take so long to get back.

yes error message is gone.i still randomly get another message whether i'm on aol or not.it is a registry editor popup that says;cannot import C\WINDOWS\All Users\Application Data\AOL\C America Online 9.0a\\avadd.reg:error opening the file.there may be a disk or file system error. AOL works fine whether or not it shows up.
