Bizarre problem with CDRom

Recommended Posts

I put some folders (which contain no audio or Winamp files as far as I am aware) onto a CD with my CD burner attached to one computer, and carried the CD into another room and put it in the CDRom of another computer, but that computer identifies the CD as an audio CD which it isn't, with a couple of small Winamp media files on it, and doesn't see the folders I have copied onto it at all. When I bring the CD back to the first computer it sees only the folders I've burned onto it and doesn't see the Winamp files at all. There must be a simple explanation for this - any ideas?

Thanks Boris - I View/Refreshed it as you suggested but it still sees only Winamp files. I tried deleting the Winamp files but it said 'access denied'. I may try replacing the CDRom with a spare one I have if I can find some drivers for it. Strange problem this one!

Thanks Scarecrow Man. I've just tried out your suggestions. First I took the dubious CDRom out of its computer and put in a spare CDRom - that worked properly - it saw only my folders on the CD and not any Winamp media files. That suggests the problem may be in the dubious CDRom rather than in the computer.

I then put the dubious CDRom in another computer and it saw only Winamp media files and not my folders on the CD despite it being in a different computer, again suggesting the problem is in the dubious CDRom. It's a CDRom that writes as well as reads, and perhaps it has some problem in its memory if it has one. I may do some further tests on it on another computer to see if I can delete the troublesome Winamp files. I speculate they may be the whole cause of the problem - they trigger the computer to automatically open them and try and play them, and being open the computer won't allow me to delete them. At least I now have a working CDRom in the computer regardless of whether I get the dubious one fixed or not.

By the way, thanks for telling me that CDRoms don't need drivers - I didn't know that - pity more hardware doesn't have inbuilt drivers. Looking for drivers on the internet and getting them installed successfully is not my favorite activity.

If it is a CD-RW you can erase the disc, and re-write it again.

It seems you may have inadvertently burned the media files without being aware of it. I know this sounds strange, but it is the only explanation I can think of. A CD does not just burn itself, and the only way to burn it is to add the files and confirm the burn process.

And yes, it is a pity that more things do not have drivers built-in. And the CD-Roms do not necessarily have them built in, more like a firmware ID, which corresponds to a windows driver which is then automatically instated for that device. As well as most CD-ROMS or hard drives operate much the same. They would use standard input/output drivers.

Yes thanks Doug and Scarecrow Man - it has solved the problem, because I can now transfer files happily from one computer to the other via CD and not via time-consuming floppies. But the mystery of what actually caused the problem remains, and if I want to use the dubious CDRom again I will need to do some further investigation. Because my sound isn't working at present I haven't been able to play the Winamp files to see what they are, so when I get my sound working I will check them out. If I remember correctly, when I opened 'Properties' to see what manner of files they were, it showed them as being last modified in 1995 which suggests they could be associated with the W95 operating system that's running the computer that I used to burn the CD. As you suggest, I may have inadvertently burned them onto the CD. I'll report back when I find out more - it's too good a mystery not to try and solve it.
