TeeCee Posted June 13, 2005 Report Share Posted June 13, 2005 HiI am trying to install Windows XP at the moment (currently running 98). When the istallation process begins I get a message - Cannot copy F:\l386\mfc42.dll to C:\windows\setup\mfc42.dll. This message comes up twice and then about 20 seconds later another message pops up saying - Fatal Error: Error 62DFF5Ch. Please conact Microsoft Tech Support.I have now tried this about 6 times and it continues to do the same thing only the error code changes each time. Other error codes haave been 4E8FF5Ch, 61DFF5Ch, 475FF5Ch.Anbody know what all this means and how to get around it?ThanksTeeCee Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
-pops- Posted June 13, 2005 Report Share Posted June 13, 2005 Are you using a disk containing a full copy of Windows XP?Are you installing on top of your W98 installation?If so, is your W98 installation working correctly or is it corrupted in any way such as viruses or trojans? dehydratedchicken Posted June 13, 2005 Report Share Posted June 13, 2005 instead of trying to install Windows on top of Windows 98 you can backup the data and make a clean installSave all yuor work etc to CD or DVDGo to your BIOS setup and select CD-ROM as your primary boot deviceTurn on your computer with the Windows XP CD-ROM in the CD drive and during boot up you'll get a message saying 'Press any key to boot from CD'Press any key and follow installation instructions from there...Theres a really good guide to installing Windows XP using this method here:http://www.simplyguides.net/guides/xp_home...tall_part1.htmlIf you are still getting problems try cleaning your Windows disk Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
