lester1 Posted June 15, 2005 Report Share Posted June 15, 2005 After a scan with a2 it reported 4 worms detected, I duly removed these and whilst doing so received a message from windows telling me that i could harm mt installation if proceeding with delete.Stupidly I ignored this and carried on the end result is after boot up XP only desplayes the desk top wallpaper, No icons no task bar no start button nothing.I cannot get windows to start in safe mode so cannot restore.Thought about booting from the windows disc but not that sure :( Any suggestions please Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

If your computer won't boot into the operating system normally, you might be able to boot into Safe Mode and use System Restore to go back to a previous restore point to fix the problem. But what if you can't even boot into safe mode? Then you need to start the System Restore tool from the command line. Here's how:When booting your computer, press F8 to bring up a boot menuSelect Safe Mode with Command PromptSelect the operating system to start (if you have multiple operating systems installed)Log on with an account that is a member of the administrators groupAt the command prompt, type %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exePress EnterThis will start the "Welcome to System Restore" screen. CurlyWhirly Posted June 15, 2005 Report Share Posted June 15, 2005 It is a false positive that has now being fixed if you check on the a² forum. The reason why you have a blank desktop is because a² mistakenly flagged the e-mail worm Win 32/Bagle.o and it was subsequently 'found' on the a² scan and when you gave the go ahead to 'fix' it you gave permission for a² to delete the explorer.exe file which is the file that displays all the icons and menus on the Windows desktop! :blink: It took me around 5 hours yesterday to work out what was wrong as this event coincided with the Microsoft updates so I wasn't sure if I had unwittingly download something from there! Also at around the same time I clicked on an infected link in PCA so I wasn't sure if I had it from there either! On my PC I couldn't get either Safe Mode or Windows File Protection to work and so I went to Windows Task Manager and selected restart and restored my Drive Image 7 backup and I was up and running again within 15 minutes.I have since found out that in the RUN command of WTM if you type in C:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe this will take you to the System Restore screen. If I had known about this at the time I would have gone down this route instead of restoring my DI7 backup. That's the 4th time now that having a backup to fall back on has got me out of trouble.p.s. in the future if a² flags malware I will actually check that it is a genuine problem and not a false positive as deleting essential operating system files can be a very foolish thing to do as I have now found out :blush: We live and learn though.
