Unwanted Control Panel entry

I have uninstalled a sound card driver that didn't work properly but it has left a redundant icon in my Control Panel. (See screenshot)

Does anyone know of a way to get rid of this entry as I don't like having my PC cluttered up with 'junk' like this?

When I right click on the entry there is no option to delete the shortcut.

I have tried System Restore but this doesn't work and I can't restore my Drive Image 7 backup as the icon was already on my PC when I made the backup 'image'.

Is there some sort of registry location where this info is stored and if so where would I look in Regedit?

I have tried the 'Tweak UI' application but in My Computer > Control Panel it isn't listed under Control Panel Extensions :(

Any help would be most welcome.

p.s. the sound card driver was from the Microsoft update website.

Have you tried START/WINDOWS EXPLORER, and searched there? Have you tried START/SEARCH and type in the name of the offending item and delete all that you find? If you use Regedit, the first thing you should do is to export a copy of the registry to a safe place in case you c**k things up. You can then re-merge the registry.

With TweakUI, you can hide the icon, and it also tells you the name of the file so you can find and delete it.

Thanks andsome. I have used Windows Explorer but as the System32 folder contains thousands of entries I wouldn't know where to start :blink:

I did a search and deleted all files that it found but the entry was still there but the icon had turned into a .dat file i.e. Windows wasn't sure what application the icon belonged to (I think this is right).

I am thinking about trying a search in the registry after first of all exporting a copy of it in case something goes wrong.

I am not sure whether this will work though?

I think the reason why the icon is still there is because after downloading and installing the Microsoft update, I rolled back to the previous driver instead of uninstalling it in add/remove programs :blush:

Incidentally if I select Open from the Control Panel menu, nothing happens so I know this entry to be redundant.

In future I will update my hardware by going to the relevant manufacturer's website instead of through a Microsoft download.

Search for files named *.cpl, that will find all the control panel entries. You should then be able to identify the rogue icon (it may be called cmi.cpl or cmiaudio.cpl) and delete it.

I've found it, the name is cmicnfg.cpl. (Changed computers to one which has this icon :))

I was about to post saying that I had already found the relevant entry but you beat me to it! :rolleyes:

Thanks very much for your help expertec as I hate having 'clutter' on my menus!

I have decided to keep the Tweak UI application as, although it couldn't help me this time, it seems a useful utility to have. ;)
