AlanHo
My desk top computer has gone wonky – it will not boot up this morning.During the boot sequence (where you get the white writing on a black screen) it gets to…..scanning IDE drives…….pauses there, and then shows the message :-No drive attached to the fast track controller. The BIOS is not installed. The screen then goes black with a flashing white cursor and will not respond to any keyboard entries.I can press Del during boot to access the BIOS set up and can see nothing obviously wrong – but I don’t understand all the BIOS stuff anyway. The only clue I have – and it may not be relevant – is that we suffered a power cut yesterday afternoon when the computer was running. However, it rebooted itself OK afterwards but refuses to this morning.I have tried the reset button several times but the problem is consistent.Any suggestions ? -pops-
Oh dear!I don't want to be the bearer of bad news but, whenever my machines are affected by a power cut, I always arrange that they shut down and do not reboot. The thing is, and I was caught out by this a long time ago, when power is restored it is often not particularly stable and often it will have noise peaks and cut outs. This can severely affect a computer if it happens during the boot sequence. In my case it resulted in the motherboard being destroyed.I have known it happen elsewhere to a somewhat lesser extent where the damage was restricted to Windows not loading and eventually, it was possible to get the machine going again - sort of.I suggest that you get your machine looked at professionally - it may cost! korgg
I would recommend that you check if the SATA controller is enabled in BIOS... But before that I recommend that you Load Bios Defaults...A small howto about the bios here
AlanHo
I have now resolved the problem - or perhaps I should admit that a friend much more savvy than I sussed it out.The power failure had altered the BIOS so it was looking at the wrong hard drive to boot from. For some strange reason on my computer HD2 has the operating system and not HD1. When I checked the BIOS I saw that HD1 was the first hard drive in the list and assumed this was correct - but it wasn't. All it needed was to select HD2 as the first drive in the boot list and all was well. It's so easy when you know how - and I don't. But I will next time. Will a mod please mark the thread as resolved.
