Birdwatching?

I have often wondered why "Birdwatching" was so popular when it is often difficult to actually see what one is watching (hence the use of portable and fixed hides).

The other day I hit on the idea of "Not Birdwatching" as a practical alternative. It is so much easier. One can go out without binoculars or camouflage clothing day or night and Not Birdwatch. One would not need a notebook, to jot down what one had not seen, nor would one need to creep about silently like a thief. I suppose that if one did see a bird, of any sort, whilst Not Birdwatching, one could ignore it and quickly whip out a newspaper, and pretend to read it, just to show the bird that you did not really care.

However, if "Not Watching" is not your thing then Cow Watching could be the answer. They are easily seen without binoculars and rarely climb trees, so they are not hidden by leaves and/or twigs. They have distinct colours and markings, discernable from a long distance away, thus facilitating easy recognition of breed. They are generally docile and will often let one get within a few yards before they turn tail and retreat. Another great advantage is that they are incapable of flying, and all that that entails with some birds, such as seagulls.

Why not give it a try. Should we ask Craig to start a Not Birdwatching section or a Cow Watching section?

We have at least one feeder set up in our back yard (off the kitchen window) all year. During the winter we have a seed feeder and a suet feeder. During the summer we discontinue the suet and add a hummingbird feeder. We also have a birdbath set up year round (not responsible for frozen water during the winter) under the feeders.

We enjoy watching the cardinals, wrens, hummingbirds, woodpeckers, bluejays, wild canaries, chickadees and other birds at the feeders throughout the year. Our kids think we are nuts....I guess the older you get the more you appreciate the creatures of this world.
