-pops- Posted June 25, 2005 Report Share Posted June 25, 2005 Backing up your own software was the platform on which 321 Studios sold their DVDXCopy software. They were shut down and prevented selling their product by some Federal Agency or other in the USA because the courts ruled that doing what their product did was against the law. It is also the reason that DVD Decrypter was forced off the market - even though it was freeware.It is irrelevant whether the backup DVDs are for your own use or not, in law you are not permitted to do it.As the preparation of backup DVD/CD copies is illegal, or if you don't believe that, may be classed as a "grey area" where that law is unclear, in the absence of absolute guidance it should be assumed that it is NOT in order to do this. Having said that, lots of people do make backups of both CDs and DVDs and it unlikely that anyone would feel the force of the law for making them for their own use (multiple copying is obviously a different matter). Even so, it still is not in order for a respectable forum to offer suggestions of ways of carrying out this copying. Other forums have rules about this and there is no reason why this one shouldn't. The recent action by the authorities on the companies producing the copying software should give a fair indication all is not well.321 Studios put up a very powerful fight against what they saw as unfair restrictions on making "safety" backups but they were heavily defeated in the courts by the media companies like Time Warner etc. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

-pops- Posted June 25, 2005 Report Share Posted June 25, 2005 No apology needed :) A thread like this one does show to those who may not know the position regarding copying of commercial DVDs and also the difficulty of forums like this one being able to stay within the ever more confusing law concerning copyright.We all know that copying goes on. Some of us may even do it ourselves but the withdrawal of the software, both commercial and freeware, that enables us to do it shows that the whole subject is occupying more and more of the attention of "those in charge". deuces wild Posted June 26, 2005 Author Report Share Posted June 26, 2005 I use DVD X-Copy Express (purchased prior to their removal of the ripping feature), TDK DVD-R disks (I never had any problems with them unlike some other brands or +R disks) and burn them on a Sony DVD +-WR/R DRU-720A recorder/player. r4may Posted June 26, 2005 Report Share Posted June 26, 2005 I don't own any commercial DVD's but I use DVD's to store my system backups etc as CD's require 5/6 to hold the backup compared to one DVD.I find http://www.afterdawn.com a good site for information on DVD software of all sorts and information / comments on what is and isn't legal.
