NTFS TO FAT32

Hi

Unless you have a program like Partition Magic, you will have to use Fdisk and delete the NTFS partition and then make a new one in it place, then format as Fat 32.

Doing this will erase ALL DATA on the hard disk

But before going ahead just wait a while to see if there are any other suggestions from other forum members.

Tony

NTFS cannot be converted to FAT, FAT16, or FAT32. You MUST fdisk it.

The conversion to NTFS is a one-way process. After you convert a drive or a partition to NTFS, you cannot convert it back to FAT or to FAT32. To restore the volume to the previous file system, you must reformat it as FAT or as FAT32. This action erases all existing data including your programs and personal files. In this case, you must either restore your data from a backup, or reinstall your operating system and programs.

Provided you have saved all of your data (or don't want to keep it) you can download a little program from the manufacturer of the hard drive which will restore it to its factory state. With Maxtor drives, this utility is called MaxBlast. Be careful to use the correct program that matches the drive manufacturer.

When you have restored the drive should then be able to format it into FAT 32 and install W98.

As has been said, you cannot convert and retain data neither can you do any of this with a drive that contains an operating system that is in use..

If you need something to format a drive, and do not have Partition Magic, you can try using a Linux LiveCD - this one is Knoppix. Download and burn the iso as an image to a CD, then boot from it. Once in, type

qtparted

and follow the instructions to format the drive.

qtparted is a open-source port of partition magic. You can also use the console version, parted, or the Linux version of fdisk.
