-pops- Posted June 29, 2005 Report Share Posted June 29, 2005 For a long time now I've used ePrompter to filter my emails (I couldn't get on with Mailwasher). This morning there was an email on the server purporting to be from Cambridgesoft - a name I recognised but I couldn't remember the association - entitled something like "Free Gift - - - -". I clicked on ePrompter to view the message on the server and it came up with "This email can only be viewed in HTML."Needless to say it was straight in the bin but, do senders really expect anyone to positively respond to messages like that and override all security precautions to read what is at best junk, at worst an nasty infection? If it was from who it said it was from, their marketing people need a good kick up the posterior.Moral: Be vigilant at all times. New tricks may be afoot to encourage you to open unknown emails. nellie2 Posted July 1, 2005 Report Share Posted July 1, 2005 I was involved in a discussion quite recently where I said that I didn't download HTML emails, they get deleted straight from the server. Malicious scripts and activeX can be configured to run as soon as the html email hits your inbox... you don't even have to view it to activate it. -pops- Posted July 2, 2005 Author Report Share Posted July 2, 2005 Likewise - I never open HTML emails from an unknown source and most businesses I'm aware of don't either.I have been in contact with the company that sent the email and discovered that it was genuine. They "never thought" that doing their sales promotion in this way would cause any problems and now realise that this is the reason they are not getting a lot of response - in fact none at all.They really should have known better. It is a company that sells scientific graphics programs and such - they are in the software business and they never thought about people having spam traps, HTML traps or filters on their email setups.
