Laptop USB Sockets & Broadband Modems!

Recommended Posts

Ok, So I was unsure whether to post this in here or in the networking board, but anyway, on with the show......

My laptop is pretty old, there are two usb posts on the rear of it, and I connect to the internet via a usb b/band modem. Over time the laptop has been moved about which lead to one of my usb sockets breaking! Fine, not a problem, I have one more!

That was six months ago! Now the last usb socket has broke! Which means no internet for me!!!

So, at last, my question.....

Is there any other way of getting this thing up at running again on broadband BESIDES getting a wireless kit??

Could the sockets be repaired? If so, would it be something I could do, or is it strictly 'techies' only?

Oh and incase you wondering - 'How can you post this if your internet's broken?' - well, thats the great thing about being young! You have to work, which is where I am now!

The big problem (for us) with motherboard connectors is that they are most likely designed for a particular model/design or, at least a particular brand. This will be even more the case with a laptop M/B. Your chances of getting a replacement socket are thus very slim. The manufacturer will not be keen to supply but want to sell you a new board.

Depending on the damage done, you might be able to attempt a repair but, this is a big risk and you should only try if the computer is otherwise dud, you have very good eyesight (or a microscope) and a very steady hand for using a micro-soldering iron.

The lappy is a Sony Vaio fx-505 had it for a few years now! The modem is the good old Thompson Speedtouch - USB connection only!

I can easily sort it by going the wireless route, but just wondered if there was anything else first!

Ho Hum, of too PC world I go!

Thanks for the replies folks!

Crack her open and solder it. I've done an XBOX before... USB can't be that hard. (actually I've also spliced an XBOX controller with a USB cable)

USB has 4 wires.. GND, D+, D-, +5V

I've ruined a repaired a USB flash drive this way before... but do not recomend it. It is very difficult, and unless you have slow steady hands you could cause more damage.

The only USB device I cannot fix is my sandisk flash drive, which cannot be opened... At least that's what they told me.
