Scarecrow Man Posted August 2, 2005 Report Share Posted August 2, 2005 I responded to a call about a computer not being able to get on the internet.It appeared the user had not done the Internet Explorer Setup Wizard, and was just clicking cancel. I went through the wizard and all was well.After a spyware clean, and some temporary file cleaning, and a virus scan, I now get a strange error....."Your Active X settings prevent this page from loading properly. Please check your security settings..."This error comes up on every explorer page (My Computer, My Documents, Any Folder, etc.) and Internet Options > Security is not showing the components properly, nor is Privacy.Security is showing 1 slide bar, set to maximum with a default button. No zones, No Sites button, just 1 slide bar and a default.Privacy is showing the same. 1 slide bar, and default.All I have done is removed spyware via ad-aware (one of which was mwsvm.bin and mwsvm.dat) which could not be removed. Everything was working fine until I restarted and now I cannot even load any desktop icons, I just get ..."Your Active X settings prevent this page from loading properly. Scarecrow Man Posted August 4, 2005 Author Report Share Posted August 4, 2005 Well, system restore is disabled.All the desktop icons (shortcuts, not windows icons like My Computer, My Docs, Network, recycle bin) are gone, and the start menu does not display. -pops- Posted August 4, 2005 Report Share Posted August 4, 2005 Is there anything of importance on the machine?I assume there is no backup so, I suggest a rescue of whatever is of value and a fresh install.As I get older, I am becoming more and more of the opinion that many attempts at repairing broken Windows are a complete waste of time when what is really needed is a NEW installation of the glass. All too often, after spending many hours tweaking, fiddling, messing about, scanning for virus, spyware, adware, anyware, you end up with a system which is a very poor imitation of what it should be and only capable of doing the most basic things. And with my new Windows/Linux network, trasnfer should be easy.I think I will also give them a copy of 2k and get ME off. I have had nothing but trouble with ME. Scarecrow Man Posted August 9, 2005 Author Report Share Posted August 9, 2005 Well, after battling with a promise card (I hate those stupid things) I finally got windows setup to load... but it is not detecting my ME install... so I said just install a new copy; so I'll have ME and 2K dual boot. After copying the setup files and rebooting, the computer booted into ME... What happened to the 2K setup? Now it freezes while booting from the 2K CD!!This is rediculous.. pa1916 Posted August 19, 2005 Report Share Posted August 19, 2005 You sound if you have deleted active X files you should be able to restore them from MS website.W2000 you should do a clean install but it's a pain in the arse to set up as it can never find anything you also have to download Media player and Msconfig as this software isn't on W2000 there is also about 70mb+ of updates to download although since SP4 was released it's not as bad as it use tobe.As WME is in FAT32 W2000 is unable to read the drive as this is NTFS. I believe they are stored in C:\Windows\Downloaded Files\ or \Downloaded Content\ or similar in ME.I now have the computer running 2K, but have not had much time to get any further. The user was mainly using it for word documents, and the kids were using it for Kazaa... which is why the computer is now dead. Lesson 1: DO NOT INSTALL P2P software! It will cause more problems and end up costing hundreds of dollars to fix, when you can download the songs LEGALLY for 99 cents from iTunes Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
