Retrieving E-mails from different ISP

I was using Freeserve. I have now moved to PlusNet (BB) and now have a new E-mail address which I have posted to all people in my address book. Just to ensure I don't miss any messages that may still be sent to my old address, is there a way of dipping into my old mail box with Freeserve without dialling them up? :rolleyes:

Not real sure if all ISPs are like the dialup I got rid of,,but when my OE checks my wireless email it also checks my pcpitstop account and my skyenet account,,the skyenet is the old dialup account.

It will pick them up from there,,but I cannot reply to them from that email,,its a read only thing. and I'm not sure you can do that with all ISPs. :) v

when i left BT a year ago as soon as my subscribtion was up i lost my e-mail address with them

I left BT about a year ago and still have my old email addresses with them but they are web based now, I can't download them to OE. I should think you'd be able to do the same with Freeserve Doug. :)

My essential addresses are with BT, and that's where they are going to have to stay because I've reached the point where the business depends on them. I've got lots of others with different ISP's and OE is still collecting mail from them because they are in my OE accounts list. This happens even though I'm only using my BT connection. However, the other ISP's are now 'wise' to this and I've received a couple of notifications saying that they want approx. £23 per year if I do not access their service through their own dial-up number. ( I'm now on ISDN, so I rarely use the modem anymore) It seems that you can keep old addresses alive simply by accessing that ISP with its own dial-up number from time to time. I can't say with certainty what frequency of access you would have to use to keep them alive, but I've still got mine by switching on the modem once every couple of weeks and accessing those ISP's through it. It's a drag, changing your connection for each ISP, but it's worth it if the old addresses have any value.

Hello doug, yes it is possible to retain your old freeserve accounts. I used to be with freeserve, then changed to NTL. I currently have 27 email addys (yes excessive I know, but they are all for different functions, and some are purely for junk accounts so they can be lost after a period of time) of which 6 are freeserve based.

The trick with freeserve is make sure that they are "no ties" accounts. If you were on an "any time" of "hometime" account, you will need to contact freeserve and ask them to change it to an "no ties" account. Just tell them you will be away travelling, and won't be using the internet enough to justify a fixed subscription.

Next you need to make a couple of changes to your email software settings. Assuming you are using Outlook Express, go to tools, then accounts, then select the "mail" tab. I am guessing that you will now have 2 accounts, your old freeserve, then your new PlusNet. Double click on the freeserve account to bring up the properties dialogue box. All you need to do, is change the outgoing mail server for the freeserve account to match that of the outgoing mailserver for your new PlusNet account. Then check that the "include this account when receiving etc." box is ticked (under the general tab), and that "always connect to using this account" box is UNchecked (under the connection tab).

Now when you click on send/receive, it should check both accounts. The only hiccup is that every 90 days you will need to reactivate the account at the freeserve website. Simply go to freeserve and near the top left is an option to retrieve a dormant account. Click on the link, then select the option for retrieving a suspended account, then the option for a no ties account and you should end up here Restore FS Account

Input your details and click continue, then select the option for advanced users to manually configure the account. This is very important, as the other options will automatically change the settings for your pc, and change you connection settings. You do NOT want this to happen. Finally at the bottom of the page is a "done" button, click on this and your browser window will close, et voilà your email will work for at least another 90 days.

Hi folks and thanks for the comments. Whils I was just about to make up a data cable to go from the master 'phone socket to my pc No.1 son-in-law turned up to return my water power washer. I meantioned the e-mail problem so I went on line and he added the old link in toold/ accounts. Bingo there were a whole load of mail waiting for me. Anyway, having thanked him profusely I kicked him out, finished making up the cable and here I am.

Finally got it and a whole heap of others inc. some I'd sent to me'sen from the link in my profile. The problem was ME, that is me myself.

work around is as follow

Open OE

Then Tools>options>security

when in security uncheck the box that says "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus"

Now click on apply then ok

and thats it your done

Well now that you have reset it......it should be ok!!! Perhaps it is the default setting when you put in a new account!!!

Reduced the security setting rule and was able to open what you'd sent before. Was that your Mum? Must admit to nearly falling out of my chair. It's more than good enough fot the mad house. :D

I've got to disagree about weakening your security. You'll get stung sooner or later, as sure as eggs is eggs.

My AVG checks incoming and outgoing automatically but I still save attachments to a 'Quarantine' folder and scan each one manually before opening. It's so easy to open an infected mail just because you think it's from a mate you trust.
