I suspect they had been handed down in the family for generations and added to and misused as necessary.His tool of first choice was a hammer, and if the task was not accomplished using the first hammer he would go and get a bigger one...and a bigger one...and a bigger one until, as usually happened, he had totally ruined/destroyed what it was that he was trying to repair.
