Chris Posted October 9, 2005 Report Share Posted October 9, 2005 As you may or may not be aware there are unofficial Service Packs for Windows 98 and Windows XP. A quick google search will find them. These 'Service Packs' are unofficial in that Microsoft never created them. Microsoft only created the separate updates, hot fixes that were only meant to be used and installed on their own. They were [officially] not to be distributed as a Service Pack and as of yet there is no Service Pack for them to be included with.All Windows Updates after Windows XP Service Pack 2 do not have a Service Pack, even though some maybe tagged with SP3. They are only meant to be downloaded via Microsoft Update and only through that official channel.Hot fixes are a little different to Windows Updates. Hot fixes should only be installed if you have a specific problem that a hot fix will fix. That's to say another person may not need the hot fix as his/her computer configuration is different to yours. Windows 98 never even had a Service Pack and whilst it maybe quicker to use the unofficial service pack, please be aware that it is not official.Please only download Windows Updates and Hot fixes through the official channel which is by visiting Microsoft Update.Microsoft UpdateThere was a recent posting on the Google Groups that sparked this post and whilst it maybe a little late coming you have to admit that there is a point to it.Google Groups Post You are also possibly making it harder for people to help you with a computing problem as this unofficial service pack may be interfering.Could all members please not post links to unofficial Service Packs where they are being offered for download. The creators of these Service Packs are in some ways doing nothing wrong, they're just combining many updates for a convenient download and install. But this has its risks and so they are not official.Windowsforum recommends that you do not install these unofficial Service Packs on to your system. r4may Posted October 10, 2005 Report Share Posted October 10, 2005 Official MS Update CD for Windows 98/ 98SEFor Windows 98/ 98SE Users Microsoft issued a Security Update CD in February 2004. That installed all the Security Updates/Patches they produced for this O/S. It was not sold and provided free of charge at the time and marked 'Not for Resale'.
