catgate Posted December 21, 2005 Report Share Posted December 21, 2005 The last time I enquired about this (some years ago), from a musician friend, I was told that there was no way to convert wav or mp3 to midi , (and viccy verccy), and it was understandable why. But quite a lot of water has flowed under the bridge since then, and great leaps have been made in doing the impossible with this sort of thing. I know that the midi is an entirly different kettle of fish to the wav/mp3, but in the end it simply comes down to electical charges on a bit of plastic. Doing the pre Christmas thing, so that we can now just pull the boulder back into the cave mouth and sit tight (with just one hand stuck out waving two fingers at it) as the whole unsavoury melange passes over us!PS I have not tried amazingmidi yet. The electricity has been off virtually all day, for tree pruning by YEB, and in addition I have had to take management to the osteopaths for bone crunching. We have only just got back. One would need a degree in Abstruse Musical Notation and Implimentation in order to utilise it. Further more, sadly it appears to do the convertion to midi from wav/mp3 whereas I was hoping to do it the other way round.Basically I have a lot of what I think of as "lift music" i.e. Muzak, that I wanted to put onto CDs, so that I could play them out in my workshop whilst I am 'spoiling' pieces of metal. I did not find any freeware programmes, so downloaded a number of demo programs and tried them out. Most of the programmes allowed you to convert just a few seconds of music from WAV or MP3 files to MIDI.It sorely tried my patience because I found that my knowledge of music, polyphonic sounds and instrument synthesis was not up to snuff. I managed to convert the "tune" but it bore little resemblance to the original instrument(s). I gave up the project with a distinct ringing in my ears. I gave up the project with a distinct ringing in my ears.I suspect that the simplest way would be to play the tunes on the computer and record them on a tape recorder. Then feed that into the back of the computer and record it on CD. But that would loose the compression (and my sense of tranquility) and would occupy vast amounts of time.
