Guest Nellie2
Yoo hoo!!!!!Well I survived and I did it all by myself..... :) well, not strictly true, I had a little help from my friends...well a lot really but don't tell them that or they will get big heads!!!! Thankyou friends....you know who you are. ;) Anyone who has been following my ramblings over the last few months will know that I have been undecided over whether to upgrade or not. I was comfortable with W98, I knew what to do if it went wrong and it was like an old friend to me.I have had a lot of help and advice from the members here at Windows Forum...both from members who said 'yes go for it' and also from members who weren't too keen on XP. That helped me make an informed decision and also made me look very carefully at what I intended to do and how I was going to do it.I have been given good advice when I asked for it and no-one as berated me for being thick...(even if they thought it!!! :D )So once again, thanks to all the members here....I wouldn't have taken the plunge without you.I must dash as I am committing the terrible sin of being on the internet without any protection, so I must load some software now...and have a peek and a fiddle with my settings. love you all. Guest Nellie2
Oh I'll tell you what I have had great fun today exploring and fiddling and I probably haven't even scratched the surface.Where did scandisk go though?????And what happened to my little icon that used to bring up the desktop when I clicked on it???? No doubt I will find a few more things but right now it is brill.............and so quick too!! :)
Prince of Calcutta
right click the hard drive in my computer and click properties under the tools tab u should find scan disk under error checking.. and are you talking about "show desktop" ? make sure the "quick launch " tool bar is ticked :)
Guest Nellie2
Oh thank you Prince.... I have my desktop button back again. :) I find that so useful... I also found the scandisk thing as well ta very much. I have set it to scan next time I launch windows... I am a bit of a scandisk nut on the quiet!!! <_
Guest ellas
not really needed in xp nel,by the way it will run chkdisk not scandisk :D
Guest Nellie2
Probably habit Ellas... I used to scandisk regularly, once every couple of days...just to keep things sweet.I just did another test at the pit and I STILL have problems with my C drive needing defragging, I thought I would have sorted all of that out with the re-format.....sigh!!!http://www.pcpitstop.com/techexpress.asp?i...N1HJWHZM00S139B
bvw
Your system will be fragmented after installing XP Nel and will need defragging. You don't really need to run Scandisk (chkdisk) either, you'll soon lose some of those 98se habits :) Good luck. Guest Nellie2
I checked the analyse thingy on the disk and it said it was ok...so I'll leave it until XP tells me to do it. The system is working fine...in fact it is flying right now, even with my old 900mhz processor...as far as 98 habits go.... well, I don't want to get complacent it never hurt to be careful! :)
bvw
900mhz :( bragging eh ;) Just cos yours is bigger than mine  ....and a 14GB hard drive is plenty big enough for me as well
Guest Nellie2
Oh..........well before we know it we will have everyone whipping theirs out to compare so that we can find out who has the biggest...processor!!
Tankus
You don't really realise how good it is, until you've had it for a few month's, and it suddenly dawns on you that you've stopped thinking about your OS and just got on with it.......
