Debra Posted January 11, 2006 Report Share Posted January 11, 2006 I just cooked my processor- I had a computer guy give me a new and much faster bigger one.Got the computer back, all he did was give me a new processor, new video card too. I kept my hard drive.So I boot up, everything seems the same... cept what the world is SIStry utility in my taskbar??? (I have to ask computer dude that one) AND.... TOO weird,Suddenly the little feature of being able to control the cookies is GONE... you know, the little feature that I could pick and choose which cookies to allow or deny, and the settings would be saved??? A little red icon would appear below in the little box when it showed me that cookies had been blocked.All gone poof!! Also, I don't rmember much of IE 5.5 - that was a very long time ago.Question: if you go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com, do you get an offer to upgrade to IE 6.0? If so, I would recommend you to do that, as IE6 is much faster and more secure than 5.5. ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb Posted January 12, 2006 Report Share Posted January 12, 2006 Well, I get a very different result list when I Google for SIStry - looks like an infection to me.I recommend to read this topic, then post a hijackthis report in that forum.I also recommend not to upgrade to IE 6.0 until this potential infection is cleaned.P.S. also be careful what you look at in by Google search result above; one of the top links is securitystronghold.com, which recommends installing True Sword - see this topic about that software.Better scroll a bit down to the Symantec site, which shows you have to manually remove that worm. I guess my computer guy thought it was a nice thing- I have NO clue how to use it tho. But I can either disable it or remove it, I notice. That should not have messed with something IN the browser however.It REALLY bugs me that the little selective cookie feature just is GONE! I wonder if one of the updates for windows ran? I noticed the puter guy was running my computer for testing without the firewall running- which I have set to NOT allow the automatic updates! I do NOT like to just let microsoft put in whatever they want to- I generally ONLY put in the security critical patches. I TRIED to get the 6.0 browser... for some reason, it will NOT install. But then, I get feedback from other computer geeks, and they all say- ditch Explorer and get Firefox...........maybe that IS the solution.A browser shouldn't suddenly LOSE one of it's features! :rolleyes: Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

For another thing, I get VERY annoyed when I hear the advice to get Firefox instead. By all means if people want to use Firefox then they are free to do so, but that can go wrong as too as I found out. The answer that you need is for someone who knows how, to help you to get IE to function as it should, and how it normally does with the vast majority of users. I am NO computer geek, but I honestly LOVE to figure out these things when they happen..... In the past, I infected myself stupidly with some viruses and got them out myself, etc... I enjoy learning THIS weird problem has me going..I'm searching all over the web and with techs and Microsoft to figure it out.It seems the Explorer 5.5 went backwards... because I HAD upgraded in t he past, the original browser I had didn't have the selective cookie blocking, only the normal one in the security settings panel....I didn't get the selective feature until I did an upgrade. Now suddenly it's GONE. What would remove an updated feature? what to look for in changed files?This problem has me fascinated at the same time I'm annoyed. ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb Posted January 13, 2006 Report Share Posted January 13, 2006 OK, I am glad it was just a typo, and not a virus.Regarding your IE problem, it may be some security settings that acts differently now.I really, really advise you again to upgrade to IE6, as 5.5 was the worst version of Internet Explorer ever. (I have used IE since version 2.0).Go to Windows Update or Microsoft Update and select the Internet Explorer upgrade only. If you encounter any problems, please post here again.The reason why I advocate to upgrade to IE6 is that this version is safer and faster than 5.5, and also it is the version that everybody has installed. It is much easier to give advice on features with something that we actually have installed.P.S. After upgrading to IE6 (and the required reboot), please go to Windows Update or Microsoft Update again to find and install all security updates for IE6 and OE6. Lamb Chop Posted January 15, 2006 Report Share Posted January 15, 2006 I use IE and think it is 6 but cant find version,I have Firefox and I can tell you it is not a patch on IE whatever anyone says for someone like me, not a geek nor a tech.I am intrigued, however, by your reference Debra to a cookie built in as I have not seen one.I use Cookie Wall and find that a godsend as it lets me know imediately who is loading one onto my computer, and also lets me keep the good ones for trusted sites.You can get one by googling Cookie Wall. AFAIK only works with IE.My only gripe with IE is that it does not have a setting to get rid of cache.I had set my history to clear 1 day. thinking it would do the cache but didnt so I got a lot stored in 2 years of blithely going on until one day I found it was the cause of not being able to log onto my Library as they had changed the procedure and I had the old one in the cache.Kept telling me to clear it etc. I kept thinking it was clear until they explain to me in ones of one syllable that I am an idiot - nicely - now I know :rolleyes: Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
