-pops-
First of all, open Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio devices. Check that all that should be ticked is ticked and all the sliders on the Advanced buttons are in a suitable position.
Ivirene
yes, I have previously checked all the settings. All look fine.
andsome
While you have that window open. Close the advanced window where you checked the settings and click on the SOUNDS tab. Scroll down and check if each of the items that you want to have a sound for does have a sound selected. You can check each one in turn to listen to the selected sound. You can also click BROWSE and select your own choice of sound.

Ivirene
have tried that too. Seems really strange that I can play mp3s but not get any sound on other things.

Ivirene
Thanks anyway andsome, looks like I may have to take to computer shop. I was trying to avoid that.Ivy
rong
Apart from the fact that you said some games, the start up bleeps on my PC work through the little speaker in the case, not the sound card. So it could be that it has come unplugged from the mother board.
Ivirene
that sounds a possibility then rong. Now that you mention it, I had a new DVD Burner put into my computer and I think it may have been since then. Thanks for your help, I'll let you know the outcome. Scarecrow Man
Your DVD burner should come with an analog audio wire. Perhaps you have installed this incorrectly, or not at all?
