Guest Shirley_Crabtree Posted May 29, 2003 Report Share Posted May 29, 2003 Being a lowly 56ker I have to suffer 4-5kbps downloads as a rule...........but I've just downloaded a utility at a steady 8+kbps!!!I've seen 15-20kbps before now at the beginning of a download but understand this is due to web-cacheing or something :blink: Does anyone know why I got this steady,above normal d/load rate?? I mean if I download an average mp3 (3.5-4 MB) it takes about 20-25 minutes but I managed 956Kb in less than 2 minutes which would suggest an mp3 in 7-8 minutes!!Cheers.Shirl.PS,as the download finished,the speed was actually increasing!! :blink: Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I also downloaded a 800k file at an average of 8.0kb's +.I put it down to the v92 modem that I have installed plus the fact that it is a very underused site. Also it may be the btopenworld, my ISP, may be getting there act together on the v92 side of things. :lol: As you would expect with dial-up, you are lucky to get 10% of 56kbs. The flipping cable is only 1/2 a mile away on the main road, but just goes to the big towns. :( We live right next to the primary school. It is well worth asking. I cannot be sure about the broadband service, but many do use the dial up service which is also cheaper than BT. andsome Posted May 31, 2003 Report Share Posted May 31, 2003 The call rates are of course cheaper than BT, but you have to add a connection charge to each call, I am not sure, but it is about 4.5p. We are on cable, and pay about £25 per month for line rental and probably in the region of 70 or 80 TV and digital radio stations. We are also on their new £15 per month scheme. whereby we pay just that amount no matter how many telephone calls we make to normal numbers. We just pay for 0845, or national rate calls etc, and also calls to some mobiles are cheaper.Do make sure that you uninstall all other ISP software before installing NTL, and check in Outlook Express that all accounts are removed. I hope you are well.Location is a difficult thing, thanks to local government reorganization. :D We used to be in Lincolnshire but where then transfered to south Humberside and now reside in North lincolnshire. I even think we had a brief spell in east Yorkshire :rolleyes: I have indeed seen "madboy's thread in the broadband section Broadband via Electric Cabling" and am green with envy.My present situation is thus, I am on btopenworld 24\7 with the option of all my evening and weekend calls are free. My usuall Bill for the quarter is around £130, which I think is very reasonable. I usually have 50 hours of internet usage carried over every month , giving me the maximum of 200 hours free use.By coincidence, there has been some news in the local paper about the local council trying to bring B.B. to the villages around here. The signs are good., but unfortunately the intelligence of the local councilors is not very good. Their definition of B.B.may not be Broad Band but Baked Beans. :angry: I am still looking to the option of switching to NTL, if the price is right. I will also keep you abreast of the B.B. situation.
