Little confused there dan. doesn't explorer need to check for emails every X minutes to notify you of new mail arriving, or does mailwasher take over this task? I've never had to use mailwasher or similar due to the fact I've never had any spam on my private ISP mail account using express, come to think of it even my hotmail dot co account has only ever had a couple since opening the account early last year.

Hope you get on with mailwasher OK. I use it and like it very much. I can bounce unwanted E-mails without letting them anywhere near Outlook Express.

Thos.

I heard very bad things about mailwasher, e.g. that it can artificially "bounce" spam. That is a very bad practice, as 99.99% of the bounces will hit innocent bystanders. Fake bounces are as bad as spam itself, and I find a product that promotes such methods very irresponsible.

I personally report all fake bounces I receive as spam.

Remember, spam is not about content, it is about consent.

After having considerable problems with Mailwasher (can't remember what they were, now), I installed ePrompter this one

This software does not bounce spam without permission (like Mailwasher can do) but allows to to delete and messages you think might be spam/virus laden and also to read messages on the server before you download them on to your computer.

As far as I can tell, Mailwasher has never bounced anything without me ticking the box to tell it to and it gives me the opportunity to delete anything I may consider to be spam and unwelcome. I use the free version, but the paid-for version lets you read messages before they are downloaded to your server.

I will certainly post if I come across problems.

Thankyou for the further posts nearly missed them.

Was good to hear different views, I'll stick with it a little longer to see if it suits me, and as Thos said you have

to check a box if you want to bounce the mail, Pat I didnt know that it had that effect but i take your point.

Djohn will check your point and get back not used it that much at the moment.

Thanks

I have the paid version and have not had a problem with it. Everything you say about it is true.

edit: I agree andsome. I think Thos was referring to deleting as bouncing, That was my understanding.

NO. Bouncing is the sending back E-mails with a fake, address not found message. See below:

MailWasher Free allows you to bounce unwanted mail right back to the spammer who sent it to you. This means that a fake, address not found message is sent back to the address the unwanted email originated from. Because the spammer thinks your address is not a valid email address, the bounce function in MailWasher Free reduces the possibility of receiving more unwanted email from this address. Bouncing is particularly effective for newsletters and companies that take no notice of your unsubscribe requests.

So, andsome and deuces, you should be safe.

Thos.

The real problem with bouncing is that it stuffs up cyberspace with things of no absolutely purpose causing congestion, reduction of bandwidth and a potential slowing of the resource that we all hold so dear.

Many thanks for the above replies.

Have found it Informative.

Have taken note off what people have said regarding bouncing.

But i do wish i could bounce the junk mail that comes through my letter box at home every day, must be a tree

a week their getting through.

Do what I do. Write on it, 'Your unsolicited junk mail returned at YOUR expense'. Then pop it into their prepaid envelope and post it.

For dealing with junk mail, register with the Mail Preference Service http://www.mpsonline.org.uk/mpsr/

While you're there you can do similarly with FAX and junk telephone calls.

The few junk letters I get now are given to my granddaughters who jumble up all the envelopes and contents and then send them back.

But make sure you weigh it down with something before you mail it back to them. I have heard of folks wrapping old phone books and attaching the return envelopes to them so the postage goes sky high.

Now THAT is a brilliant idea. I will do that next time.
