NEXCOMPAC Posted March 9, 2006 Report Share Posted March 9, 2006 I am currently looking for the most ideal way of backing up our server running windows 2003.Two things I need help with:Software req'sHardware application - ie. tape drives, external hdd's etc....I have had run-ins with Dantz but find the software robust. Plus, they allow backup of workstations.I'm not fond of tape drives, they break, get dirty, scratched, only 20gigs....Ok, any and all help would be great!! The most important thing with backups is to have the original (the PC) an on-site backup, done daily. And an off-site backup, done weekly.The onsite backup can be done to tape, and there is nothing wrong with using tape drives. They are more durable than you think, as long as you take proper care.For the off-site I might recomend an external drive. Perhaps Firewire 800, or better yet, a removable SCSI drive. Both give good speeds, so you won't be waiting hours for the backup to complete.As for software, I might suggest Norton Ghost. It is easy to backup and re-deploy incase of a failure. Scarecrow Man Posted March 10, 2006 Report Share Posted March 10, 2006 Few years old, but may give you some good information - Tape StorageI would probably recomend either an internal SCSI/IDE or external hard drive, as the speeds have improved greatly over the years. You will require a USB 2.0 controller to gain the advantage of a USB 2.0 device. I would recomend an IDE rack over USB, depending on the External Enclosure, the internal can be faster.Example IDE Mobile RackGhost and Acronis will make an Image File, which must be restored via the program it was backed up with. andsome Posted March 10, 2006 Report Share Posted March 10, 2006 pops convinced me to use Acronis. I have no regrets. I use an external USB hard drive. As pops says, you can just plug straight in.
