I'd just like to ask whether or not it is a common problem to find that, in Windows 2000, the system slows down noticeably (e.g. cursor movement gets choppy, and more obviously audio gets choppy) when the CD drive is being read. I have a Sony CRX320EE DVD/CD-RW drive. No special drivers seem to be available for this drive though I have flashed the drive with the most recent firmware version. Besides, I also had this problem on my laptop when I briefly had Windows installed on there. It's the fact that audio goes all choppy that really bugs me...I don't know what might be causing the problem, but perhaps somebody can offer some advice? Thanks! andsome Posted March 25, 2006 Report Share Posted March 25, 2006 Sounds as pops says like a possible memory problem. I used to get the same problem on my old computer. Jez Posted March 26, 2006 Author Report Share Posted March 26, 2006 I built the PC myself then installed Windows 2000 on it (personal preference (and I don't have a copy of XP lying around), but if this problem is isolated to Windows 2000 then I might upgrade). Like I say, I've had this same problem on my laptop using Windows 2000. Windows isn't my first choice of OS though which is probably why I'm unable to identify the cause of the problem.I've noticed that DMA doesn't appear to be enabled for the drive, and the option to enable it is not present. There is no 'Settings' tab present in the Properties dialog for the device. There is only an 'Advanced Settings' tab where DVD region locking options are present. I imagine this means Windows' standard driver is not capable of providing DMA support for my drive. Does it sound as though that might be the problem? As no special driver is produced by Sony (or LiteOn) for the drive, am I out of luck as far as Windows 2000 is concerned? It seems unlikely that there is no solution bar upgrading to XP... Scarecrow Man Posted March 26, 2006 Report Share Posted March 26, 2006 CD-ROM's do not require drivers. You will not find a driver for 2000 or XP regardless.Firmware is how a DVD drive operates. Usually firmware is only to be upgraded when you have a problem, and as you said, this did not help.DMA should be enabled, but is not nessecary.Are you having a problem when the drives spins up? I've noticed, mostly when burning a CD or DVD that the entire computer will freeze up for 1-2 minutes while writing the lead-in of the CD, afterwards, returning to normal. You should check your processes manager to see if the CPU is being uses excessivly, if so, it is likely something else causing the problem. Jez Posted March 27, 2006 Author Report Share Posted March 27, 2006 The problem occurs only when reading from this drive, not at any other time. When a disc is being read the CPU tends to hover around 50-60% which doesn't really explain anything. Also, the problem is present all the time that a disc is being read (for example if I copy a CD's contents to my hard disk, the problem is present right up until the transfer finishes.) It is not only while the drive spins up that things move slowly.I appreciate the help I've received here so thank you all.
