Exit GUI into terminal

Recommended Posts

I've just installed Ubuntu (only distro I had laying around) on a VM. But since it is a VM, I had to install the VMware tools to be able to properly use it.

To install the VM I am required to log out of my GUI into a terminal session.

I looked all over, and must have missed something but I could not find out how to exit the GUI. I eventually just logged out and logged in via failsafe terminal. I now have VMware tools installed, but for later reference, is there a quick way to exit the GUI?

Well, I have not installed the VMware tools, but they are required to be installed via terminal with no GUI running.

I will give that a try, thank you Alan. I also plan on dumping Ubuntu for Gentoo or SUSE soon. Just wanted to brush up on the basics again before I jump in.

But, since Novell bought Suse, it looks like Gentoo is my next venture :)
