Scarecrow Man
I've just installed Ubuntu (only distro I had laying around) on a VM. But since it is a VM, I had to install the VMware tools to be able to properly use it.To install the VM I am required to log out of my GUI into a terminal session.I looked all over, and must have missed something but I could not find out how to exit the GUI. I eventually just logged out and logged in via failsafe terminal. I now have VMware tools installed, but for later reference, is there a quick way to exit the GUI? Alan2273
I do not use Ubuntu but have you tried Alt + F2 to open a new terminal. To exit the GUI for a terminal session try Ctl + Alt + ( F1 - F6 ).
r4may
I have never used Ubuntu either, but can't you get a terminal session up from one of the Options of the GUI and install the VMware tools from there ?
Scarecrow Man
Well, I have not installed the VMware tools, but they are required to be installed via terminal with no GUI running.I will give that a try, thank you Alan. I also plan on dumping Ubuntu for Gentoo or SUSE soon. Just wanted to brush up on the basics again before I jump in.But, since Novell bought Suse, it looks like Gentoo is my next venture :)
scuzzman
In a standard distro (I'm not sure if Ubuntu is included or not) you can simply hit <Ctrl>+<Alt>+<Backspace> to kill a X server and get dumped to a terminal.
