xp load problems

Just built a computer but when I try to install XP it goes through the loading files stage, then when it comes to start windows it comes up with a stop error 0x0000007b saying check for viruses and check disk configuration.

This happens with either Sata or Ide hard disks.

I looked up the error number & it said might be memory so tried one stick at a time. Still the same.

I did manage to get ME to run using a H/disk with it already installed on using a boot loader, so cannot be much wrong.

Any ideas gratefully received.

Asus P5WD2 mother board.

Intel 4 dual core processor.

Nvidea 6600 graphics

2 * 512 crucial ram

200 g Sata hard disk

Had seen this in my search but don't understand all of it.

I will probably have a go at updating the bios. Never tried this before but it does say in my handbook I can recover from a failed update, so hopefully I am safe.

I have found a lot of queries over this fault but no real answer.

Have now updated to the latest bios but still doesn't load.

Is the RAM the brand suggested/recommended by ASUS?

The reason I ask is because a machine I built with an ASUS A7N8X-E had ASUS Samsung memory recommended. I ignored that, put in Crucial (ostensibly the same) and the machine wouldn't load. Swapped for Samsung and it worked OK.

Thanks for that suggestion, I AM using Crucial memory (dual 512m) and have tried swopping them around different slots with no luck so perhaps yours is the answer. The only problem is I purchased them from Crucial so can't get them exchanged for a different make.

All working now. Changed DVD rom into a different socket got over that problem & a bit of meddling in the bios got over the rest of the problem(Cannot find HD).
