Seshomaru Samma Posted May 22, 2006 Report Share Posted May 22, 2006 Today when I logged in as my limited rights user I discovered I don't have internet. Ipconfig claimed there is a problem with the media. I suspected a hardware problem but mounted the system with Knoppix just in case, Knoppix had no problem accessing the internet. I booted back into windows (as administrator) and decided to do a system restore ,it is then that I discovered that I dont have that lower bar thing (what do you call it ? the one with START on it..) ,I tried to boot into safe mode with CLI support . I ran %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exebut it said that Windows cannot start system resore (can't remember the exact wordings, it was in Chinese anyway)What can I do? -pops- Posted May 22, 2006 Report Share Posted May 22, 2006 Unfortunately if Windows tells you there is no restore point then there is nothing you can do to make it appear.I assume you don't have a backup of your system.I am always nagging people to make a full system backup of their computer setup and keep it up to date. System Restore is NOT a substitute - as you have found, it is unreliable.You could try a repair of your Windows installation see here. If you become a subsriber to Windows Forum you can get a special offer price for Acronis. See here.Regarding the repair of Windows, check the link I gave in my first post for instructions how to do it and what conditions there are. Im glad you seem to have it sorted, one thing to do now you are up and running is to reset your system restore points so you know you have a good backup point.. If it is not enabled for you to do this then enable it now !Resetting system restore points....1) On the Desktop, right-click My Computer2) Click on Properties. Click the System Restore tab. 3) Look for the box near the top which says "Turn off system restore off on all drives"4) Place a tick in the box to disable5) Click Apply first, and then click OK and the window will dissapear.Now reboot your computer....6) Right-click My Computer once more7) Click on Properties.
