Does anybody know what the command is to turn off monitor.?

Recommended Posts

I would like to create a keyboard shortcut to turn off my monitor by pressing this one button that i've never had to use anyways.

Right now the button is set to put my computer into hibernation, and i know how to change it's function already ;) , i just need to know what the executable is to turn the monitor off. ( in other words, power management. )

Thanks.. ;)

This is a good way to encourage people to the forum, instead of answering their questions ridicule them.

What on earth is up with you? I am NOT ridiculing anyone. I just cannot understand the reason for wanting the monitor to switch itself off, when you have been sitting in front of it.

I remember on my old PC the monitor power plugged into the PC so when that switched off so did the monitor.

I now have everything connected to one main switch, when I have shut down the PC I flick the switch and shut power off to PC, loudspeakers, printer, router, etc.

On mine everything connects to one power surge protected 13 amp unit, so when I switch off at the wall, everything is dead, including the cable modem. This is why I am puzzled by the need for the monitor to switch itself off. I never use hibernation mode. I know that many do, but I have heard of reported problems with this. My screen saver is set to start up after 5 minutes and the monitor to close down after ten minutes. That is as far as anything goes until I switch off at the wall.

If you right click on the screen and select properties you should get the Display settings, Click on the screen saver tab, select Power and set a time in the 'Turn off monitor then save as a scheme and acitvate. that should do what you want.

As far as I've seen their is nothing to do exactly what you want other then downloading an app or adding a registry key that will a shutoff option in your right-click menu. For the app you could try these

http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/nircmd.html

http://www.grc.com/wizmo/wizmo.htm

http://www.koding.co.uk/files/monoff/MonOff.exe

Heres the registry key you would add

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

;Adds Turn Monitor Off to right click of MY Computer
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}\shell\[Turn Monitor Off]\command]
@="MonOff"

The programs offer a lot more options and all you would have to do is put it in one of your path folders(system32, windows), then add add shorcut to it with arguments to shut the monitor off. Hope it helps.

Doesn't the monitor itself have an on/off button?

Seems easy enough to me to switch it off before walking away.

Well see thats kind of not the point, By pressing the power button your actually turning off All of the monitor's power, Wich for one is hard on a monitor, Two when i do actually press the power button when i want to use the computer again and the screen ( desktop ) comes "back on" it's all screwed up :( ( picture not fitting to screen good ) because of the fact that the guts ( electronics ) inside the "Mon" are not at normal operating temperature ( Cold ) ;) When windows turns it off for me it's not actually off, just in power saving mode and therefore more easily turned back on ( restored back to normal ), "Notice the L.E.D. on the front changing color's "??.

If you right click on the screen and select properties you should get the Display settings, Click on the screen saver tab, select Power and set a time in the 'Turn off monitor then save as a scheme and acitvate. that should do what you want.

Yea i know about that ;) , And see thats the reason why i asked, because i'm getting sort of tired of "switching" back and forth between Power saving mode for my monitor being applied or not.

Boy.! , I hope i didn't start any bad feelings now between everybody.??

Thats preaty cool.!, But i think all i need to know is "Whats the executable in windows that turns off the monitor" .?? I've looked and looked for it but don't know where it is..I think i can make a keyboard shortcut for that if i knew what the ".exe" was..

But i'll check out that Wizmo thing too..I do thank you for that.. :D
