validating windows

Am trying to update a friend's XP-Home machine. When I ask Microsoft Update for updates, it checks availability, then says it has to check validation; after which it says validation fails. I assume this has to do with checking whether the Windows XP is legit. The OS was installed by Dell and has not been removed or reinstalled. Furthermore, Microsoft did start to download SP-2 a few months ago, but my friend had only a dial-up connection and so it never finished. I am now trying to help her with my own broadband connection, but don't know how to deal with Microsoft's sudden reluctance. Help, anyone?

I have never seen a failed validation, so I don't know what you get (error code?).

If I were in that situation I would call Microsoft (or Dell) and ask them what's up.

I understand that in cases of failed validation there is a telephone number given on screen for you to contact Microsoft and explain to them what has happened. Provided everything is in order, they will give you another product key to validate the software.

If things are not in order then, as Pat says, contact Dell and mkae your feelings known to them.

Also, SP2 is available on CD from Microsoft.

There is a new validation tool out K B 892130 give it a try.

They put a fail on the validation of the copy if it has been reported stolen or abused ( too many copies sold on the licence)

Just checked the link and it says it will only work on IE :lol: :lol: typical MS.

Or go through windows update on the start button. ;)

As I have said in another thread, I cannot understand why people buy a computer without asking for a FULL installation CD. I think that some of these branded names just want you to have to have their bod in to reinstall for you, at a price of course. Best place for new computers is your local computer builder, or build your own if you have the capability.

Its probably MS fault for letting them have multiple licences for one installation disc

There is no way I would accept an OS without the disc and key.

After reading numerous problems on various forums - I would always insist on a disc.

Slight out of topic - my laptop came with XP installed - but the PC has a bought copy on disc. Would that work on the laptop if there was a problem? ........and no, I didn't have a disc with the laptop - it was bought online and only really used for recreational pursuits like PSPro and as a backup to the main pc.

Validation gives quite a few problems with Corperate versions of XP Pro as you usually have to do the updates manually, due to Keys provided by MS do are not always accepted by the validation tool. You can still use the auto update though.
