dagwoood Posted June 13, 2006 Report Share Posted June 13, 2006 I'm currently using the TeaTimer component of Spybot S&D to provide real-time spyware protection on my laptop, but I wandered whether it was any good, or are there any other better freeware offerings?Ideally I'm looking for something with a small memory footprint as there's only 512MB of RAM on my laptop.Any suggestions please? I've had a look at the features of SpyCatcher, but it doesn't mention that it actively watches your system and prevent spyware from installing, so am I correct in assuming that it's just a scanner?What I meant by a "small memory footprint" is that it doesn't use a lot of RAM. rong Posted June 13, 2006 Report Share Posted June 13, 2006 I installed spy catcher a couple of weeks ago and it looked on several of my installed programs as spyware, DVD shrink was one Hoversnap could have been another, can't remember the others. dagwoood Posted June 16, 2006 Author Report Share Posted June 16, 2006 I installed Spycatcher Express, ran a scan and it said it had found 4 items. The problem was I'd already ran Avast, a-squared, Spybot and Ewido and they hadn't found anything. I did and on-line scan at Panda and they didn't find anything either, which leads me to think that it was showing false positives, bore out by the fact that it classified Fresh Download as ad-aware.You can't tell how much memory it's using either as it runs and hides the processes. I only found out it was running by using F-Secure Backlight. So, I've uninstalled that and after having an "enlightened" moment, I've installed WinPatrol to see how that performs.
