Without any reason, my cpu goes crazy and raises to 60+ % even when I'm not doing anything. as a result, my computer doesn't shut down. my whole computer doesn't run as it should, everything is slow. I'm starting to get sick of it. and I was hoping you would know something. maybe a program to check what all my 60% of cpu is used for, cause it's not shown in taskmanager? or something like that?Grtz, Reno Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
dagwoood Posted June 21, 2006 Report Share Posted June 21, 2006 Hello RenoSaurus and welcome to the forum.If in taskmanager you can see that your CPU isn't under load(i.e.CPU usage reading 0%)and you're hitting temperatures of 60 degrees, then it sounds like a cooling problem.Most modern BIOS's will pick up that the CPU is running hot and it will activate thermal throttling. What this does is slow the speed that your CPU is running at, in an effort to cool it down; hence the slow down you're experiencing when your processor gets hot.The most probable culprit is a defective CPU fan. Have you noticed if the fan has sounded different recently as this is a common sign that it's about to fail? If it's not the fan, then the heatsink may have come loose and require some more thermal grease being re-applied to the CPU and re-seat the heatsink correctly.Do you have any other case fan, and if so has one of those failed? This could cause your CPU to run hot as the hot air it generates isn't being removed from inside your case.A build up of dust on the fan and the heatsink it sits on can also cause a rise in temperatures, so you could try cleaning them first and see if that helps.HTH, dagwoood. RenoSaurus Posted June 21, 2006 Author Report Share Posted June 21, 2006 correct. when I open task manager, and click on the performance button, it shows that I use 60% of my cpu, which would be normal if you where running a game or something like that. but I don't. I'm not doing anything, no downloads, no music, nothing. my mouse suddenly is slow, and when I push the processes button in task manager, nothing shows an ammount of cpu which would explain the 60%. Ofcourse I have a virusscan, and i'm behind a router with firewall. also i've recently tried reinstalling my computer, using format c:but that din't solve the problem. -pops- Posted June 21, 2006 Report Share Posted June 21, 2006 I don't quite understand what you have done when you say i've recently tried reinstalling my computer, using format c:Do you mean you have instructed Windows to carry out this procedure or ?If you formatted and re-installed then that would cure the problem but it is an extreme measure to take.A router behind a firewall will not necessarily prevent the installation of all malware.What I meant by an anti-malware scan was with using, for example, Ewido click here or SuperAntispyWare click here. These are two very good programs for seeking out things that would be better not to have on your computer. There are many others.If this does not work, then you may be best running a HiJack This scan and having the results interpreted by one of our experts but, let's see how this goes first. To do that open task manager, click the processes tab, go to view, select columns and you can pick what you want to monitor. Also don't forget about other great tools like performance monitor or process explorer from sysinternals. Also when I have this happen its usually something scheduled to run that I forgot about or something that schedules itself like a virus scanner. RenoSaurus Posted June 25, 2006 Author Report Share Posted June 25, 2006 turns out my computer has been hacked. virusscan was activated for extra scans by hitman pro, and then found 3 PUPs and 1 virus, backdoor .........that might explain why my computer was running slow. I probably have a virus which disables mcafee virusscan. I've made an image of my disc, right after I reinstalled my computer, but I now think the trojan is already there. Identify it, and remove it.Make sure McAfee's definitions are up-to-date, then run a full scan.Next run the online scan at http://www.ewido.net/I was afraid being unable to remove it, since the trojan wa slocated in the system 32 folder, so it was running whenever windows was running. got it removed now, though.this, however, was not the problem with my computer . my usb only recognises a new hardware when I restart my pc, I can't boot my computer from a cd and, as you know, the cpu problem. Go to http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm, read the usage instructions on top, then scroll down to 264 and safe the file to your HD, then execute it.This should restore your missing Task Manager tabs. mark2 Posted July 6, 2006 Report Share Posted July 6, 2006 There have been a couple posts lost in the down time.You can reorder the processes by clicking on the cpu tab when in the page, lowest or highest usage at the top.Looking at your screenshot we are unable to see perhaps 50% of your running processes, have you tried scrolling down using the scroll bar ?
