I remeber hearing Sunderland wanted to take the finish. Sunderland got offerd it when it was just an idea but turned it down so South Tyneside took it on, we do all the work in help making it a success and Sunderland want to take it.......SOUTH Shields will host the finish of the Great North Run for years to come, founder Brendan Foster pledged today.The promise was made on the 25th anniversary of the first running of the Newcastle to South Shields half marathon.The event puts South Tyneside in the national spotlight and raises millions for good causes.But there have been suggestions that the route of the run could be switched away from South Shields.A move to Sunderland or even a circular route in Newcastle have been mooted.Today Mr Foster said no such switch was now on the cards.He said: "In the 90s in particular, there was consideration of possibly changing the venue for the finish because the existing finish does create a bottleneck. I'm more than happy with South Shields, at least I'll be able to find where I will have parked the car before taking the Metro into Newcastle for the start of the run. Also a lot of angling takes place at the end of the South Shields pier.More to the point The Great North Run (a 13.1 mile half Marathon) starts in Newcastle, goes through Gateshead - usually with the Red Arrows airial display team cavorting over the runners - then along past Jarrow and Hebburn to finish on the Leas at South Shields. This year it will be the 26th run and my 4th. I'm trying to do it in 2 hours and will post my annual request for sponsors on here shortly. This year the run takes place on Sunday 1st October. If I had read FINISHING instead of FISHING I would have understood. Although I always look upon this event as a bit of a cheat.
