"You have files waiting to be written to CD"

I booted up this morning and was greeted by a balloon containing the above message.

Curious, I clicked on it and was taken to a folder with no sensible name and no content but (I can't remember the details) it gave all indications that this was waiting to be written to CD by the XP CD writer.

I have NEVER used the Windows CD writer nor ever opened it even just to have a look at it on this machine. Also, I have not used this machine for writing disks of any kind for a long time - for which I would use Nero anyway.

I deleted the folder, did a search around for things that shouldn't be there and rebooted. The message didn't reappear and everything seems normal.

Was it just a Windows blip or something more sinister? :(

Have you gooooooooooooooooooogled...? :)

Errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, no, I don't know what to goooooooooooogle for. I (perhaps unwisely) deleted the name of the folder so I'm a bit stuck for searching.

Everything seems OK, I was curious if anyone else had seen the same message in the same circumstances.

Thanks for that, CofD.

I have done as suggested in your first link. As I mentioned, though, this has never happened before and there have been no changes in the machine setup - well, certainly none from me.

I'l see how it goes :)

It is an un-nerving feeling when such things happen. I was online to CCL Computers, this afternoon, ordering bits for my new Linux box of nonsense, when I had just such a moment. I had just ordered a motherboard, a processor and some memory and was just looking at towers when "Bingo" everything locked solid. The only means of doing anything was the three fingered salute.

I did a thorough search and a clean up with CC, ran HJT and found nothing untoward (as far as I could see) and rebooted. It has behaved perfectly since then. But it makes you think.

It means as the title says pops.

You have files waiting to be burned to CD. Open My Computer, and go to your CD-R/RW (or DVD-R/RW) and see if there are files waiting.

If not, it may be a bug in which case navigate to

C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\CD Burning

and delete any files here. Dont worry, they are copies, not the original files, so they are safe to delete.

You may need to check other user's as well as your own.

No. I didn't have files waiting to be written. The folder that it said the files were in was empty but also, I have NEVER used the Windows CD burner on this machine (or any other).

It must have been a blip in the system. Everything is proving OK and I've not had any problems.

There are no other users on the machine - I wouldn't allow anyone else on it :). I keep two other machines for others to (potentially) mess up
