Cannot play DVD's

Recommended Posts

I have just completed a re-install of XP Home SP2. Device manager shows no problems. When I try to play a DVD, with Windows Media Player, I get the message "Windows Media Player cannot play DVD video. Open Display in Control Panel, and then lower your screen resolution and color quality settings. To view the DVD Troubleshooter, click More Information." The troubleshooter does not solve the problem.

The screen resolution was at it's lowest setting of 800x600 pixels and I have changed the colour quality setting from highest(32) to lowest (16)

I have installed and activated Cineplayer DVD Decoder pack, which enabled me to play DVDs after the last re-install of windows.

Could I have forgotten to install something during the re-install of XP?

Just used Windows XP video decoder checkup utility, it says the decoder I have is not compatible with the sychronisation feature of Windows media Player. I don't understand this as it worked OK before I had to re-install XP. I am going to phone Sonic tomorrow and see what they say, I will post back with any news I get.

Or there's AVS DVD player one of the few free ones to come with its own codec.

Hi,

I have just installed the player and it will not play either my own recorded DVDs, nothing happens, or a commercial DVD, I can hear the intro music but no picture then it the player closes down on it's own!

Both types of DVDs played OK before I re-installed XP.
