here is my story:

I start my computer, it boots, i wait 'till i can login > i type my password, press enter > and now the problems start!!! :

It goes like: ..........Applying Personal Settings........ then the loading screen disappears

,the lower menu bar pops up, and then the computer stops loading!!!!!!!

this is really weird: nomatter what boot mode i choose, this error keeps occuring, it also doesnt matter which user i use...... :huh:

i noticed something once: i pressed log off [after using CTRL + ALT + DELETE], and then the explore.exe has caused errors [or something like that] window comes up [> End Now window]

i dont know what to do know!!!

please help me

this error is really recent 'cause something like 15 minutes before this error occured i even used the computer!!!! :0

i really dont know what caused the error, but there is something before this occured:

the fax stopped working: it does give the message that we have a incomming message, but it doesnt print it, even though the fax is set to send and recieve [i used the right printer {ALL IN ONE}]

i also removed some apps from the startup log > Quicktime and another useless programm!....

PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!

here is a important note: THIS COMPUTER RUNS ON WINDOWS 2000 !!!!

now, i managed to start log in > things are like 100000000 times slower than normal. :s

edit: this link is for Win XP, i run 2000

and another thing: i dont have the installation cd.... :s

i just opened the boot setup before windows started

accessed the system event log > show:

is says: "CMOS Checksum error" and "Keyboard error"[?]

does anyone know what the CMOS Checksum error is?

It means that the data in CMOS is corrupted

This can be caused by a virus or more likely by the CMOS battery that ran out. Replacing the battery depends on which kind of motherboard you have.

Can you log in in safe mode?

You can scan for viruses with this excellent Gentoo Linux CD (even if you cant boot the system)

i run Windows 2000, not linux [!]

i can log in on every mode but the computer is like 10000000000 times slower as normal, and as soon as i am logged in, it stops loading and i can open the start menu but the computer just freezes as soon as i try to use anything from the start menu

is it possible to buy a CMOS battery in a standard computer store/shop?

btw: how can you see which battery you need?

i would be very likely that the battery causes errors, 'cause its been giving the Battery is running low on power, message when i turn of the computer and restart it [i pull the plug]

but could this affect the pc's speed/performances?

Low battery can corrupt the data in CMOS but unlikely to affect the system's speed

The CD I reccomended runs on all systems including Win2000

You just put it in and reboot

It's a very effective way to scan unbootable machines for viruses

hmmmmm.......

thanks for the help

but after my uncle had a look at it he noticed that it had nothing to do with the CMOS battery... > that was caused because we unplugged it...

here is the real case:

it seems that the hard-disk was getting old and worn... [dont know if i used the word in the right sentence...]

can someone tell me how ,in gods name[my excuses to the ones who believe], a harddisk could get worn?!?!?!?

Why do hard drives wear out? First, it is important to recognize that the platters inside a hard drive (which look something like several CDs impaled on a golf pencil) are spinning remarkably fast. Many popular drives boast speeds of 10,000 revolutions per minute (rpm). At these speeds, any friction leads to heat and physical wear. Heat is an important consideration because physical materials expand and contract by different amounts, based on changes in temperature. The size of a gap between surfaces will change with the temperature, and an important component of drive engineering is to make sure that such changes do not lead to unexpected friction that can lead to undue wear.

There are moving parts inside the hard drive that, over time, affect how long the component will last. The platters inside are spinning remarkably fast, sometimes at 10,000 revolutions per minute. Above the platters is a head that reads and writes data at incredible speeds. Controlling the head is a mechanism called the head actuator, which relies on a motor to move an access arm (with the attached head) slightly above the surface of the platters. Most drives have several of these platters and heads stacked extremely close together.

So, not only is there continuous movement inside your hard drive that can make it wear out eventually, but even a slight accident can cause a head to scrape the surface of a platter and scratch off a bit of magnetic material, leaving a divot. This divot, in time, can gradually diminish the surface of a platter, and ultimately make your hard drive useless.
