There is a letter today in the Daily mail that attracted my attention. Not because I agree with all of it - I don't - but because it seems to have expressed how I believe an increasing majority of people in the UK are currently thinking.

I am of course aware of the possible dangers of posting such material here - and do so in the hope and expectation it might produce some unemotive and considered responses.

After a lifetime's loyalty to Labour, supporting the party from its lowest ebb in the Thatcher years to Tony Blair's election triumph of 1997, I have decided to change allegiances.

Labour is now a party I'm frightened of.

The latest leadership debacle is a clear indication of how unfit the party is to govern itself, let alone the country. Labour has espoused the kind of political correctness that we in Britain both despised and satirised during the Chinese cultural revolution.

This mindless culture has now become central to our daily lives. Common sense and logic seem to have evaporated.

Labour's socialist dream is mutating into an Orwellian nightmare, with government more intrusive now than at any time in history. Its insatiable appetite for our money to fund state sponsored meddling has reached sinister proportions, in particular with the proposed introduction of ID cards.

That legislation alone heralds a chilling future for us, changing the tradition of trust for ever and leaving a legacy of fear and suspicion.

I honestly can't see anything there to disagree with.

I would go along with all the views expressed and I think I would go even further. It is not only New Labour I fear. The fact that the population has not rebelled has signalled to the other power seeking parties, such as they are, that here is a virtually supine population, many of them ill educated and work shy, who can be milked dry and manipulated by spin, to the extent that almost anything can be done with them.

What we are currently seeing is the gradual seizing of total control, in the communist manner, but the "benefit" of that control being passed to "the private sector". Thus we have the worst combination of communism and capitalism.

It is very difficult to see how the tide can be turned or even stemmed.

It is an anathema to "go backwards", and there is no one with experience of the future. Anyone proposing any alternative to our deeply flawed system is immediately condemed by the spin systems of our existing establishments as "unreliable/unworkable/unethical/ unetc/unetc." and we all go back to sleep.
