How do you do a clean install of IE?

My Internet Explorer (I use it once and a while, especially to access MS items) is very slow to load.

I would like to remove it and do a clean install. Is this possible?

I should note, that you cannot "un-install" and re-install IE. It can only be repaired. The only true way to re-install it is to re-install the entire OS.

Thanks! I followed the instructions and everything is working OK but IE..........it still takes about 15 to 25 seconds to come up for some reason.

Any clues?

That is way too long! The first thing that I would try is to defragment, but I have the feeling that it will not do much good; but anyway, try it.

You do not, by any chance, clear your Windows\Prefetch folder? I have recently come across someone who did, which really slowed a number of things down.

Could it be that you have some corruption? Maybe it's time to run the old CHKDSK and SFC?

If no other ideas, then maybe a Windows repair install will fix things...?

I am up to date on my defrag..............it runs nightly.

Yes, I was dumping my prefetch folder when using crapcleaner and cleanup! I unchecked those boxes.

Ran checkdisk and sfc scannow....no improvements.

Ok - CCleaner: do you have 'Delete Index.dat files' checked? If not, do it, and reboot Windows. If Index.dat is very large, it can take IE longer to load.

I cannot find "Deleted Index.dat files" to check when opening CCleaner. Where do I find that?

As I do not use IE except for accessing the MS site, I guess this is a low priority for me.

I downloaded IE7 today and it also was slow to open. I eventually traced the problem to SpySweeper. Rather than trying to find out which setting was causing the slow opening problem I disabled the program and IE7 now opens instantly.

Any suggestion on what settings could be causing this problem>

Do you know what version of Sun Java you have? There have been reports that update 6 caused a bit of a conflict with spysweeper with this sort of result. I wouldn't really suggest that you go back to update 5 as there are some security issues with it. But... Java Runtime Environment (JRE) is now on update 9, so why not go to add remove progs and uninstall all instances of sun Java, then download update 9 from here and see if that helps
