Snip
Hi!I just re-installed windows 2000 pro after a big computercrash, and most of the things seem to work.Only my screen displays 16 colours, and its biggest possible screen area is 800x600 pixels.I cannot change it, because I get no options to change it. 16 colors is the only choice, and for screen area i can also opt for 640x480... not really an improvement. It also says " Display: (default monitor) on VGA" It is the same monitor as before, and it is perfectly capable of displaying much better. How can I change this?Should i download something? What? Where from?Or install a file from the cd again? If so, what would the file be called?I really hope someone can help me.... :(
doug
If you still have the driver disk for you monitor I suggest you run that also the same for your display adaptor.

(Some other things weren't, so I installed windows 2000 pro again.) They didnt have a driver disk for my monitor either.. how did they do it?Can I do it that way too? doug
Bit confused on this - I'm not an expert. You say you originally had 2000 pro running, so why did the shop install Win 98? We'll have to wait for one of the experts on those OS's but a little more info might help them. Can you fill in the details for your system via your MY Controls at the top, then scroll down that panel on the left, then edit profile. They will need to know what computer it is, mother board, monitor and display adapter (graphics card - if any). May take a while for responses though so be patient. Snip
They will need to know what computer it is, mother board, monitor and display adapter (graphics card - if any).Oh dear, I don't know all that. The computer was put together by someone else, so it isn' t an original machine anyway. It had windows 98 on it originally, and that is what is on the sticker on the box. The windows 2000 i installed was originally from my cousin, who upgraded to XP and gave me his old cd.In the computershop they said they would install what was on the sticker. I wasn't to bothered, because i figured i had the 2000 cd at home, and would simply install that once i got the machine back.I think something went wrong with the installation though, i did get an error message saying that " the dynamic link library MSDMO.DLL could not be found in the specified path" but i have no idea if that has anything to do with my screen settings... trackrat
The fact that you have only 16 colours says that no drivers are installed for your graphics. To find out your graphics card follow these instructions,Open Control PanelSelect SystemClick the Hardware tabClick Device ManagerAnd see what it says under Display adapter. If it is Nvidia you can get the drivers from here.http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.aspIf it is ATI you can download the drivers from here.https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default...amp;folderID=27#As far as the MSDMO.DLL file is concerned it can be downloaded here.http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?msdmo

I went all the way to device manager, but there was no " Display adapter" there. What do I do now? :0 And that MSDMO.DLL.. what is it for? Snip
All those things it lists, are they all in my computer? I didnt see any ATI or NVIDIA there. Lots of intel, [ut i suppose that is a completely different thing? Where should I look anyway? Again, I saw no display adapter listed anywhere. I was wrong! It does have something called ' display' and when i click on it, it comes up with lots and lots of stuff.. all of which mean nothing to me.And when i click on 'monitor' it comes up with no information at all. trackrat
You are not computer ignorant, we all have to start somewhere. If it is Nvidia, click on the link I gave you, then click GRAPHICS DRIVER, then click GeForce & TNT, then Windows XP & 2000, then click GO, then scroll down to the bottom of the license agreement and click ACCEPT then click on PRIMARY DOWNLOAD SITE, then save to your Desktop. It is a 40mb download. Then clck on the shortcut on you desktop and follow the instillation instructions. I did that, and *ofcourse* it didnt work, i got the message that"the nvidia setup program could not locate any drives that are compatible with your current hardware" So i assume it wasnt nvidia after all. What should i download on the ATI site? And do i have to register there? My brain really hurts now!
trackrat
For the ATI driver you need W2000 with service pack 4 installed. As i have never used an ATI card, I will have to leave you in the more capable hands of the other forum members, because there are two downloads, one for raedeon graphics cards and one for motherboard integrated graphicsDid you download Everest, if you did run it and click on summary and see what it says under DISPLAY.Also click on Motherboard and see what it says under Motherboard physical info/Integrated devices. And finally you do not need to register for ATI drivers. If no one else picks this up I will try to guide you through the ATI driver process. trackrat
Open Everest, click on the DISPLAY heading then click on Windows video and see if there is a link to the drivers there., as it looks like you have integrated Intel video. There is nothing in "windows video"...Is an integrated intel video another driver? If i do have that, would i not need to download ATI? I never downloaded anything, or installed software for this screen before, and it worked fine. I wonder what went wrong. :(
trackrat
If the video is integrated then you should have a motherboard driver disk that will contain the drivers. When you looked in device manager, were there any yellow or red marks against anything?. Not from the windows 2000 installation cd and not from internet (windows update)under sound/video and game controllers there is also something with that questionmark and a yellow dot/exclamation mark, it is multimedia audio controller

trackrat
Put your motherboard disk into your CD/DVD rom and it should run automatically, if it does not, open My computer and right click your CD/DVD rom, then click autoplay.Install all the drivers it has.
