Here it is: - part I (security, desktop, installing software)- part II (upgrades, coping with errors, performance) You are welcome to comment on this.Just to clarify -- I don't want to start a flame-war and please read the article first before commenting or don't comment at all. Remember that the article is about 10 reasons I dumped Windows, not 10 reasons you should dump Windows :)If you find any errors please let me know, I'm willing to correct them. I'm also very eager to learn the ways of solving the worst annoyances with XP, since I have to use it for work anyway, so any tips are very welcome. Alan2273 Posted October 12, 2006 Report Share Posted October 12, 2006 As one who dual boots Xp & SuSe, i have to agree with a lot of the points you make michuk, but as millions of users have no intention of learning another operating system, it will be an uphill struggle, although the Linux cause may be helped by the fact of paying for another Windows OS and also the new hardware to run it.Also you cannot play a lot of modern games (I know about Wine & Cedega) which install and play with no problems in Windows.Yes Linux is more secure than Windows, but the average user is not interested in that as long as it runs they do not care.I await part 3. But then again Vista is about soon and I might give that a go also?Can Linux be in a network with XP systems at the same time? I have SUSE v10.1 and Slackware v11.0 and FreeBSD v6.1. Any recommendations as to which would be the best to use? Or is there a better version that I should look into downloading? Are they straight forward to setup etc?I do like XP and I am abit dubious about changing!?! You can compare the features of those distros (and others) on PolishLinux as well. Some examples:- FreeBSD vs Slackware- Ubuntu vs openSUSECheck out more if you wish. Alan2273 Posted October 13, 2006 Report Share Posted October 13, 2006 SuSe 10.1 is easy to install, but I would advise any beginner to use the 10 version, as the yast 2 package manager is problematical at the moment, hopefully 10.2 will fix that problem.
