How are your Fans?

Recommended Posts

One of my granddaughters said the other day that my (main) computer was quite noisy. She was right and, as some may know, I'm all for the quietest computer possible, it was quite a surprise when I realised.

From starting off two and a half years ago with an almost silent machine, the noise level had risen at an imperceptible rate to something quite noisy and I hadn't noticed.

So, yesterday I replaced all the fans in the machine - two case fans and the CPU cooler which is a Zalman which uses a standard case-type fan separate from the heatsink itself so there was no problem changing that. I also had a good scrub around (gently, of course) with a brush removing the accumulated muck and gunge - it's amazing the amount of stuff that finds its way and gets stuck in there.

Today I'm back with my almost silent computer again which I'm sure is running cooler and as good as new.

Anyway, the point of this is to recommend that you keep the inside of your computer clean, listen for any changes in the noise it makes and do something about it.

Good advice -pops- My daughter asked me to have a look at her computer which wouldn't boot. The first thing I did was take the side off and give it a good clean out. It was mucky... cleaned all the fans and checked everything was connected ok. Turned it on and it booted up with no problems at all. :)

I have another good tip for anyone who likes to get the very most they can out of their fans before they absolutely have to be replaced.

Carefully peel up the label/sticker on the center of the fan housing, there will be a small plastic washer and pin underneath, put some general use oil in (NOT WD-40!!) and it will quiet down 90% of your noisy fan problems, plus extend the life of the fan.
