andsome
I recently installed Registry mechanic, and everything seemed fine for a time. Then the computer started to freeze and needed restarting with the restart button. I uninstalled the program but still had the problem. my next step was to install an Acronis backup, and once again the computer ran like a dream. However, earlier on today when I had not used it for about an hour, I moved the mouse to switch back on the monitor, and found a black screen with a small cursor flashing in the top left hand corner. Three attempts at restarting with the restart button failed to get past this point, so I turned the computer off. Ten minutes later the computer started completely normally and has now been on for several hours. What on earth could have happened? Belarc shows the C drive as being Smart state HEALTHY. Everest shows the temperatures all to be well within safety limits. All scans show clean. My settings are for the monitor to switch off after ten minutes and for the hard drives to stay on. andsome
I forgot to mention that I have also run sfc /scannow. We have just returned home after being out all afternoon, and the computer is still running fine. Very strange.

-pops-
Is it running OK now?I seem to recall a long time ago (W95 days) that a program I removed needed a cold reboot before I could get the computer back running properly again. Perhaps this is another instance
andsome
It's running like a dream again. The problem was that it wouldn't boot at all. either from the restart switch or the On/Off switch. The black screen occurred after about an hours running, well after I had installed my Acronis back up, and about an hour after I had left it running. Since then I have left it running for several hours with no problems at all.
D4\/!d
I think it's just one of those things. A techie might say " Yeah, it does that." From time to time my XP Pro SP2 machine does the same. The little reboot button does nothing, I cannot shut down, and I cannot turn off by pressing the power on button. The only thing that has an effect is pulling the power cable out of the back of the pc, and then booting up again.Very strange, but then we are talking about computers aren't we..!! ;)
andsome
Fingers crossed, it's still running like an express train.
ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
I, for one, have for long given up using "registry cleaners" like Registry Mechanic, RegScrubXP, CCleaner "issues", etc. The "benefit" from using these tools is simply not worth the potential trouble they can cause.People who take regular backup are of course in a much better situation to recover from potential disasters, but even then - why tamper with a perfectly running system?CCleaner file cleaning, Startup Inspector cleaning, defrag, etc. are all perfectly OK. But the days of "registry cleaning" are gone for me.
woodchip
If you have more than one strip of memory and the problem comes back, try with just on strip in the comp. As I think it may be worth running a Memory check also
andsome
No trouble at all since the original one.
