Help Please. PC running very slow, wierd stuff happening

Hi

For about a year I thought I could get away without any virus protection on my computer, and now it seems I am paying for it. Needless to say I have learnt my lesson, I went out and bought Norton Antivirus 2007. It says I have no viruses. Unfortunately my pc is running ridiculously slow. I don't know what to do, can someone please offer some help/advice?

Here are some things that have begun occuring in the last week or two:

Every 5 minutes or so a dialog appears asking me to connect to the net. I always click close or work offline and it just keeps reappearing. This never used to happen.

It takes at leasta minute for anything to happen. I mean you click on 'My Computer' or to open Firefox and about a minute later it will open.

Every so often a window opens itself that looks like MS-DOS and then another dialog appears saying something about RUN DLL, and sytem32.

In Firefox something hijacks a tab and tries to open this page, winativirus.com. Then it opens all these dialogs asking me to install winantivirus

On top of all these it is really slow, almost unusably slow.

If anyone knows how to combat any of these problems, your help would be most appreciated.

Thanks in advance, Mat.

My view is that the machine will be so over-run with things that shouldn't be there, the only reasonable remedy will be to re-install everything including the operating system.

Even by doing this, it may not remove malware that has installed in the computer itself (BIOS etc) rather than the operating system.

If you have a slow computer, it's a pity that you didn't mention this on here before you bought Norton. Unfortunately, it is likely to slow things down even more. There are many better programs, depending on whether you want to go the free route, or pay for something a little better. I use NOD 32 from Eset.

Hi all, thanks for your help. In the end I preservered and Norton did the job. It is virus free and running good again.

However, I still have this annoying site hijacking my browser window. It always tries to take me to an anti-virus page. Does anyone know how I can get rid of it. Norton Anti-Virus misses it, as does Ad-Aware. Anyone?

Thanks, Mat.
