Lost Sound on BBC News Site

I have lost the sound when playing video using Media Player on the BBC News Site. I have had a play with various codecs but no luck so far. The problem is on both IE7 and Firefox browsers. I don't know whether it is my computer or the BBC web site at fault.

Odd you should have this at the moment, Alan.

I found on my main machine this morning that a number of sound and video codecs had disappeared from my main machine. Just about everything I tried to play on WMP came up with a message that it couldn't find the correct codec.

I've re-installed the Klite pack and everything is now back to normal but, I don't like these inexplicable happenings.

Thanks pops - downloaded Klite and it did the trick.

I don't understand all this codec stuff and upon installing Klite it told me it first had to uninstall the Microsoft XP codec pack and an AC3 codec pack. Not knowing any better - and having the comfort of a weekly Acronis back up to fall back on - I gave it it's head.

Normally, I would have done a re-install from backup but I've been thinking about upgrading my Klite pack for a while now and this was an opportunity to do that.

I suspect it was self inflicted.

I posted on this forum a link to a rather splendid French mime video. Management wanted a hard copy on CD or DVD to play on the TV at her friends who have yet to climb into the 21st century computer wise - but they actually have a DVD player and TV.

About a year ago I bought a little programme called Internet Video Recorder which captures a selected area of your computer screen, plus the audio, and saves it to an .avi video file on your hard drive. I have not used it often but since I upgraded to IE7 it seems to have developed the grumps - even not being happy with FF. I tried to capture the French video - but it failed to capture it properly. After much mucking about with various video and audio settings - plus re-installing the programme - all without success, I sent an Email to the software company asking for their help.

They advised me to temporarily deactivate any software firewalls, uninstall their programme, re-boot the computer and reinstall. It worked and the programme now captures video streams perfectly. I rarely bother with the BBC news videos and cannot recall the last time I viewed one - but I suspect it was this video capture programme that was the culprit.

I was a bit concerned that Klite might have affected the video capture programme - but it seems to be OK.

One thing I have realised over the past few days - is how fragile the various settings are on audio and video programmes and that they sometimes argue with each other. I hope Vista will simplify things.

My computer has just downloaded and installed an MS update - Media Player 11.

Now on the BBC site - the sound is perfect - but there is no video stream when using Media Player - just a black square. It works OK using Real Player however.

Anyone else in the same pickle with Media Player 11....?
