Thos Posted December 26, 2006 Report Share Posted December 26, 2006 As 1926 was the year of my birth, I thought I would acquaint you of one or two things which occurred in 1926.Also born in that year were Marilyn Monroe, Jerry Lewis, Tony Bennett, Kenneth Williams, David Whitfield, Honor Blackman, George Martin, Fidel Castro and Queen Elizabeth. Depressingly for me, most of them are dead now!! But me and the Queen keep strutting around.England won the Ashes in 1926. Huddersfield were Football League Champions for the third consecutive year. A woman swam the English channel, the first time a female had done that. The most popular musical was "Desert Song". The most popular song was "Bye Bye Blackbird". Fred Astaire came to London and danced on the London stage.London had it's first traffic lights (in Piccadilly Circus). The first ever General Strike occurred. John Logie Baird demonstrated television for the first time. Permanent waves were introduced and Mae West was arrested for corrupting the morals of youth.Nostalgia ain't what it used to be.What happened in the year of your birth?Thos.
