STk_3000 Posted December 26, 2006 Report Share Posted December 26, 2006 so i bought a new pc and installed a fresh copy of win xp pro with sp1and for the first time in my life activated automatic updates.. and my pc updated all.. except sp2 .. cuz i hate it ;))the other day i was installing some programs and found out that all of them had an error when creating the start menu and desktop shortcuts to their .exe (almost every program creates a shorcut after it is installed on the desktop and in the start menu)the ones that dont explicitly say "ERROR CREATING SHORTCUT D:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\DESKTOP ....." do create a folder in the start menu but leave it empty :|i suspect that an update has something to do with this..i have all the win updates i installed in the add remove programs so if anyone had this problem or knows how to solve it please tell me.. i would be very very gratefullthx Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Do you have any protective software(s) installed (anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewall)?I don't understand your comment about SP2; this was the most important security update for Windows XP. Running XP without SP2 exposes your system to all kinds of dangers. Also, SP1 is no longer supported by Microsoft, and you won't be able to install any new MS software. STk_3000 Posted December 27, 2006 Author Report Share Posted December 27, 2006 got bit defender internet security 10... updated...sp2 means low performance in some games + allot of things that dont find their purpose...i have scanned with bitdef and nothing.. -pops- Posted December 27, 2006 Report Share Posted December 27, 2006 sp2 means low performance?Where do you get that notion from?If SP2 did behave in the way you say, don't you think there would have been an outcry from the millions and millions and millions of users of Windows XP SP2 before now? Yours is a lonely voice expressing this opinion. Problems that SP2 is reputed to cause are due to a fault in the system it is being installed upon, not with the upgrade itself.I would strongly suggest that you install SP2 as soon as you can - if it does adversely affect your system then correct that by a re-install, don't condemn SP2 as being at fault when, in fact, it is your computer. The problem is, that by going on line unprepared, you may have already exposed yourself to risk. I am another one who fails to understand where you get your information. On here, most of us run several Anti Malware programs in addition to SP2 and all other updates. What one misses, another will find.
