Coreper Posted January 5, 2007 Report Share Posted January 5, 2007 prepare for a big story with questions:1. i never had as much virusses as i had lately, someone know how to prevent this?some of them come from downloading software files [like .exe files >> i know, its not smart, but i needed to have that software]i wonder if a bunch new virusses has been released lately....i am really good protected, and my real-time virus protection always notes the virusses when they come in, and removes thembut i still dont trust thisanother important thing might be that i have the Gmail Notifier, which monitors my online gmail account for new email, and shows me a message when i recieve a new email.2. how is it possible to get so much virusses lately?im really worried, because i got the infostealer.trojan trojan yesterday... it was in the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Folders\ibm00002.dll directory3. what is the C:\Program Files\Common Files\ directory for kind of folder? can i empty it?4. does anyone here also know what the best firewall and [real-time]antivirus products are? If your preference is for "dodgy " sites and using P2P services the likelihood of picking up viruses is much increased. You say you are downloading .exe files and software so I am assuming that your sources for that are at the edge of legitimacy - hence the propensity for receiving more malware.Be aware that things like Spyware Blaster, Spyware Guard, Lavasoft Ad-Watch do NOT give protection against viruses.Also be aware that it is now 2007 so an anti-virus system of 2004 as you have, is likely to be out of date, even if you have kept up with the updates.Regarding your question 4: does anyone here also know what the best firewall and [real-time]antivirus products are? [not your opinion] well, you will get as many answers as there are antivirus systems. I use AVG, mainly because it seems to do its job and I've had no problems with it - unlike Norton. I have no reason to change. Others, and even so-called independent reports have differing views on which is the best so that, in the end, it is up to you to make your own mind up. Be warned, though, that if you persist in visiting "less than salubrious" websites then you will eventually get caught no matter what protection you have. I now use Nod 32 AV with Zone Alarm Firewall. I also use Spyware Blaster, SUPERAntiSpyware, A Squared & Spyware Guard. We each have our favourites, but I think that you will find the majority of the more experienced forum members have long since lost all interest in Norton Products, especially as they support NOTHING more than a couple of years old, apart from offering definition updates.I wouldn't touch P2P software with the proverbial barge pole. Speed of download is irrelevant.I use Zone Alarm free.Nod 32 is paid for and well worth every penny. As long as the subscription is up to date then support is available, either by e mail or telephone from Bournemouth at standard call rates. This was made specially for me and included all my details. They are a very good and easy company to deal with. You can download a free trial from the UK site. But I also hear good things about BitDefender. On the VB Comparative: Windows XP - June 2006 this is what they both scored.
