I recently picked up a Maxdor 320Gb external USB2 (16mb c/7200rpm) from PC world in the Xmas sales for £69.. there are some good deals around ...!

That would be $140 USD.

Why are you folks across the pond having to pay so much more?

Interestingly, college textbooks are cheaper from UK suppliers (including shipping to the US) than what is being demanded at US College/University campus bookstores.

What is wrong with this picture?

As trackrat said, it's rip-off Britain. We seem to pay more compared to yourself in the US, and until recently, we paid a lot more than our European counterparts.

Take the price were being expected to pay for Vista. You will be able to got it a lot cheaper than us, and when Microsoft were questioned about this, they came out with the "usual" BS that distribution/production costs are dearer and because of how retailers are here.

It's our own fault because we don't make a fuss about things and pay the prices anyway, even though we know we're paying over the odds. As I alluded to earlier with regards to until recently we paid a lot more than our European neighbours; that was only resolved by the EU commission looking into the situation and agreeing that we do indeed pay more in the UK than other countries and for no justifiable reason.
